Job description
- Design, develop, test, and maintain enterprise-grade Java applications
- Build scalable, secure, and high-performing solutions using modern Java frameworks and technologies
- Develop and support microservices-based architectures and distributed systems
- Collaborate with architects, business analysts, QA engineers, and other developers throughout the software development lifecycle
- Participate in code reviews, ensuring adherence to coding standards and best practices
- Create and maintain technical documentation for applications and services
- Troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives and the adoption of modern development practices

Requirements
- Strong hands-on experience in Java development
- Experience with one or more Java frameworks and libraries, including Spring, Spring Boot, Hibernate, Struts, JavaServer Faces (JSF), Apache Commons, or Guava
- Strong understanding of object-oriented programming principles and software design patterns
- Experience developing and consuming RESTful APIs
- Familiarity with microservices architecture and associated technologies, including Docker, Kubernetes, and Swagger/OpenAPI
- Experience with source control systems such as Git
- Understanding of software testing methodologies and automated testing practices
- Knowledge of Agile delivery methodologies
- Proven experience delivering solutions within the UK Public Sector
- Understanding of Public Sector delivery frameworks, governance, security, and compliance requirements
- Experience working on large-scale digital transformation or citizen-facing services is highly desirable
- Experience with cloud platforms such as Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud is desirable
- Knowledge of CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices is desirable
- Experience with messaging technologies and event-driven architectures is desirable
- Familiarity with secure coding principles and application security standards is desirable
- Exposure to container orchestration and cloud-native development patterns is desirable

This role is based in Manchester, London, or Leicester, with three days per week on site and some weeks requiring five days on site. The contract length is 12 months, with a salary of £41,000 to £45,000 per annum.
