The position is subject to final approval of external funding and will be filled contingent upon the confirmation of the consortium PUNCH4NFDI.

Shaping the Future of the National Research Data Infrastructure

The DZA is a co-applicant in the consortium PUNCH4NFDI, contributing to the development of the National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI). Within this nationally coordinated initiative, we are actively involved in the work package “Compute Infrastructures”, addressing the access to distributed computing resources, including HPC, cloud, and accelerator-based systems

We invite applications for a Research Scientist to advance innovative methods for enabling remote, scalable analysis of large datasets by moving computation to where the data reside.

YOUR TASKS:

  • Design and implement scalable code-to-data and federated workflow services
  • Develop interoperable interfaces enabling cross-archive queries and data access
  • Integrate AAI, accounting, and container/version tracking into astrophysical workflows
  • Contribute to architectures supporting reproducible and traceable data-product evolution
  • Optimize workflows for distributed HPC and cloud environments
  • Collaborate with national partners within PUNCH4NFDI and the broader NFDI framework
  • Publish results and contribute to community standards and best practices
  • Participate in scientific meetings, workshops, and collaborative research activities

Requirements

Do you have experience in Python?, Do you have a Master’s degree?, * Completed Master’s and PhD in astronomy, physics, computer science, engineering, or a related discipline (or equivalent experience)

  • Demonstrated expertise in at least one of the following areas:

o High-performance computing (HPC)

o Big data archives and distributed data systems

o Advanced data management tools and infrastructures

o Cloud computing and federated services

  • Strong programming skills (e.g. Python, C/C++, or comparable languages)
  • Experience with container technologies (e.g. Docker, Singularity) and workflow orchestration
  • Experience in designing scalable services for large scientific datasets
  • Familiarity with distributed authentication systems and federated infrastructures is an advantage
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in interdisciplinary, distributed teams
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent communication skills in English
