Job description
As a Senior Design Quality Engineer, you will serve as a technical authority on complex systems, designs, and quality engineering decision-making. Reporting directly to the Senior Manager, Quality (based at our Shanghai office), you will act as the primary hands-on bridge between Product Development (NPD) and mass production. Your mission is to embed a âDesign for Qualityâ mentality early in the product lifecycle, ensuring it isnât just a phrase, but a verified, repeatable reality before high-volume manufacturing begins. You will act as the upstream gatekeeper, ensuring designs are mature and fully validated before handoff to our China-based quality team who manage ongoing mass production.
You will work as part of the product development teams on complex tasks and longer-term projects, taking ownership of timelines and driving successful outcomes without the need for continual guidance. This is an on-site role, working a minimum of 4 days per week from our office in Broxburn, Scotland. The role also requires the ability to travel to China and other SE Asia countries approximately 4-6 times a year.
What youâll do:
- Early-Stage Design Partnership: Actively partner with Product Design Engineers from the initial project kick-off to embed âDesign for Qualityâ principles early in the R&D lifecycle. You will ensure that quality, reliability, and manufacturing constraints are inherently built into the product design long before the design freeze for mass production.
- Risk Management & Mitigation (DFMEA): Serve as the technical authority on risk-assessment methodologies. You will lead and facilitate Design Failure Mode and Effects Analyses (DFMEAs) alongside the design team, proactively identifying potential failure modes, establishing critical-to-quality (CTQ) characteristics, and implementing mitigation strategies.
- Strategy & Forward Planning: Think 6-12 months ahead to align design-quality milestones with project goals. Proactively shape the productâs design by contributing technical insights, test observations, and engineering feedback gained from early prototype evaluations.
- NPD Project Leadership: Lead the quality engineering strands of complex, cross-functional New Product Development (NPD) projects. Take full ownership of qualification metrics to drive successful product launches.
- Cross-Functional Integration & Peer Alignment: Maintain close, collaborative relationships with compliance, engineering, sourcing, CPI and supply chain peers. Articulate how design tolerances overlap with supplier capabilities, ensuring a smooth handoff from prototype verification to factory floor execution.
- Process Governance & Validation Standards: Own and define the product quality criteria in our Quality Control (QC) documentation. Set rigorous standards for design verification testing (DVT) and production validation testing (PVT). Consistently deliver high-quality results, ensuring new appliance designs comply with Ooniâs internal standards, global regulatory benchmarks, and industry compliance.
- Data-Driven Engineering Decisions: Fairly assess complex testing inputs, tolerance stack-ups, and statistical data to make rational, well-informed design-quality decisions. Rationalize engineering trade-offs using ROI calculations. For highly complex issues where prototype data may be incomplete or unreliable, proactively collaborate with senior team members for support.
- Advanced Problem Solving: Adapt quickly to unexpected prototype failures or unfamiliar technical challenges. Champion root-cause analysis frameworks (such as 8D or Six Sigma) to solve complex issues, pushing beyond standard best practices to help design novel, robust solutions and product features.
- Stakeholder Communication: Tailor complex technical data and validation results into clear, concise updates for cross-functional stakeholders. Appropriately summarize lengthy testing reports and confidently present design-readiness findings to the wider department or business.
Requirements
Do you have experience in Root cause analysis?, * Technical Expertise: Significant experience in quality engineering, design verification, or regulatory compliance specifically for consumer appliances, gas, or electrical products.
- Project Ownership: Proven experience working independently to drive complex technical projects to successful outcomes within a fast-paced consumer goods environment.
- Problem Solving Mastery: Mastery of Quality and Design Tools (e.g., DFMEA/PFMEA, 8D, Six Sigma, Lean, or Design of Experiments) with a strong âsystem-thinkingâ approach.
- Communication & Inclusivity: Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to account for different personalities and levels of experience, communicating in a way that is inclusive, persuasive, and effective.
- Operational Agility: Demonstrated ability to manage day-to-day prototyping and manufacturing quality issues while simultaneously planning 6-12 months down the line., When you join one of our global teams, youâre joining a dedicated group of do-ers who value Kindness, Passion, Innovation, Ambition and Rigor above all else. We live, work and play by these values and are proud of what weâve built here. As a member of our team, you will also receive the following
