Squire Patton Boggs is seeking a visionary and strategic Global Director of Legal Innovation to lead the development and execution of the firm’s global artificial intelligence and innovation strategy.
Working closely with the firm’s AI Committee, executive leadership, practice groups, and business services teams, this role will drive the adoption of transformative technologies that enhance legal service delivery, improve operational efficiency, and create competitive advantage for our clients and lawyers.
This is a unique opportunity for a forward-thinking leader who combines a deep understanding of legal services with expertise in emerging technologies, particularly artificial intelligence and data-driven solutions. The successful candidate will help shape the future of legal practice by identifying, implementing, and scaling innovative technologies across our global platform.
This is a single opportunity that can be based in a variety of geographic locations. While the position may be advertised in multiple cities, we are seeking to fill one role and are open to remote work arrangements, including in locations where the firm does not currently have an office presence.
Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership & AI Innovation
- Develop and lead the firm’s global legal innovation and AI strategy aligned with business objectives.
- Identify and prioritize high-impact opportunities for AI and automation across legal practice areas and business operations.
- Advise firm leadership on technology trends, opportunities, risks, and investment strategies.
- Establish and maintain a strategic roadmap for innovation initiatives and AI adoption across the firm.
Technology Implementation & Transformation
- Evaluate, select, and oversee the deployment of AI-powered solutions and legal technology platforms.
- Collaborate with practice leaders, IT, Finance, HR, Knowledge Management, and Operations teams to embed innovative technologies into legal and business workflows.
- Lead pilot programs, assess outcomes, and scale successful initiatives globally.
- Monitor emerging developments in AI, legal technology, and data analytics, recommending practical applications for the firm.
Governance, Risk & Responsible AI
- Partner with firm leadership to support governance frameworks related to AI, ethical technology use, data privacy, cybersecurity, and regulatory compliance.
- Develop and maintain policies, standards, and best practices for responsible AI utilization.
- Ensure all innovation initiatives align with client confidentiality requirements, professional responsibility obligations, and applicable legal standards.
Change Management & Adoption
- Drive firmwide adoption of AI and innovation initiatives among attorneys and business professionals.
- Design and oversee training, education, and awareness programs to enhance technology proficiency and AI literacy.
- Foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement across the firm.
Data Strategy & Knowledge Enablement
- Partner with knowledge management and data teams to optimize the firm’s information assets for AI-enabled solutions.
- Identify opportunities to leverage institutional knowledge and firm data to enhance innovation efforts and improve service delivery.
Vendor & Client Engagement
- Manage relationships with technology vendors, consultants, and solution providers.
- Evaluate third-party technologies and potential build-versus-buy opportunities.
- Collaborate with clients, where appropriate, to explore and develop innovative legal service solutions.
Requirements
-
Juris Doctor (JD), MBA, or advanced degree in law, technology, artificial intelligence, data science, business or a related field.
- Approximately 10+ years of progressive experience in legal practice, legal operations, consulting, professional services, technology leadership, innovation, or a related discipline.
- Demonstrated success implementing AI, advanced analytics, or technology-driven transformation initiatives in a legal, professional services, or highly regulated environment.
- Experience leading cross-functional teams and enterprise-wide initiatives.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Strong understanding of AI technologies, including large language models (LLMs), machine learning, natural language processing, and related technologies.
- Deep knowledge of legal workflows, law firm operations, and legal service delivery models.
- Familiarity with legal technology platforms, including research, contract analysis, document review, eDiscovery, and knowledge management systems.
- Strategic mindset with the ability to translate complex technologies into practical business value.
- Exceptional communication, influence, and stakeholder management skills.
- Experience working in large, global, matrixed organizations preferred.
- Understanding of law firm economics, pricing, and client service models is highly desirable.
Benefits & conditions
The expected annual salary range for this position is $250,000 - $500,000, depending on location, experience, qualifications, and other job-related factors. In addition to base compensation, this position may be eligible for participation in the firm’s discretionary bonus program.
