Job description

  • Do you get energy from distributed systems where large streams of telemetry, events and real-time decisions come together?
  • Do you want to build software that handles power intelligently and helps balance and green the energy grid?
  • Are you looking for a place where you really give direction as a senior: shaping architecture, sparring with the CTO and making the team stronger?
  • And do you say yes to a salary up to €90.000, hybrid working, and genuinely enjoying your work, knowing the impact you make?

Then read on.

Your employer: a small but stable Amsterdam tech company that handles power intelligently

You join a small but stable Amsterdam tech company working at the intersection of software and energy. They build a platform that handles power and capacity intelligently, so energy is used more efficiently and the grid is less heavily loaded. The company has grown healthily and organically over the years. That brings calm: here you build software that is allowed to become truly good, and that you keep building on for years.

The operational foundation is in place: thousands of connected charge points, and the metering, reporting and billing all run. Now the interesting phase begins. They are turning an operational network into an intelligent energy platform that decides in real time when and where you charge, where capacity is available, when power is cheap and when the grid is heavily loaded. That calls for real-time data, forecasting and smart control, and that is exactly why they are bringing in a senior.

The team is small and close-knit: a CTO, a few engineers and you as the senior who helps set the technical direction. You spar with the CTO, strengthen the mediors and establish standards around architecture, reliability and observability. So you have plenty of ownership and leave a real mark on how the platform and the team develop. That makes your work visible and meaningful., As a Senior Backend Engineer Amsterdam you help build the core of the platform, with Java 21/25, Spring Boot, Docker, Azure and CosmosDB in a cloud-native, event-driven environment. You design and build services that process large volumes of metering and session data, and you make the architecture decisions that determine whether the platform can scale reliably.

The real challenge is real time. How do you process continuously incoming data and make reliable decisions on it, for example to charge when power is cheap or to throttle back when the grid is under heavy load? How do you keep such a system correct and available as the number of charge points grows? These are the questions you sink your teeth into, with direct impact on the energy supply.

You are more than a builder here. You give technical direction, mentor the mediors and raise the engineering level. In practice, colleagues look to you for the course, even without a formal team-lead title.

Requirements

  • Minimum 6 years of experience as a backend engineer in the JVM, Python, Go or TypeScript
  • Domain knowledge of energy balancing and/or EV
  • Experience with event-driven or real-time systems is a strong plus
  • Comfortable with a cloud platform (Azure is a plus, AWS or GCP also fine)
  • A feel for architecture, concurrency, reliability and observability
  • You take ownership and make the people around you better
  • Good command of Dutch and English

Benefits & conditions

  • Salary between €75.000 and €90.000 gross per year
  • Hybrid working: 2 to 3 days from home per week
  • Travel allowance
  • 25 holidays
  • Pension
  • Training budget
  • Plenty of ownership and direct influence on the technical course
  • A small, close-knit and ambitious team with short lines
