Job description

MITRE’s AI and Mission Enablement Department within the Mission Computing Division is seeking an Associate AI Solutions Architect to serve as an entry-level technical individual contributor within AI Enablement. With instruction, guidance, and direction from more senior staff, the Associate AI Solutions Architect will complete defined assignments that help mission teams use approved AI tools, workflows, data integrations, and development environments securely and responsibly. Roles and responsibilities include:

  • Support technical and mission-user discussions by asking questions, confirming understanding, and documenting objectives, workflows, data needs, and constraints for review by more senior staff.

  • Implement, test, and document defined components of AI-enabled applications and workflows using approved tools, APIs, data sources, development environments, and existing solution patterns with guidance from more senior staff.

  • Follow established security, data-handling, and responsible-AI procedures when using approved capabilities; document results and limitations and refer questions or issues to the appropriate team member.

  • Use established procedures and basic analytical skills to troubleshoot simple application, API, data, or environment issues; record findings and seek assistance when a problem exceeds the assigned scope.

  • Adapt existing prompt examples, starter kits, workflow components, and development templates for assigned use cases; maintain clear setup instructions and reproducible examples for review and reuse.

  • Assist with demonstrations, training materials, office hours, hands-on experimentation, and routine user support; capture user questions and feedback to help the team improve its guidance.

  • Build working relationships with AI Enablement colleagues, mission users, and supporting platform and security teams; complete assigned tasks, communicate progress, and develop knowledge of MITRE capabilities and processes.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, artificial intelligence, machine learning, data science, software engineering, systems engineering, or a related technical field; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience. No prior full-time professional experience is required.

  • Must be eligible to obtain and maintain a Secret U.S Government issued Security Clearance within one year of hire. Per the U.S. Government’s eligibility requirements, you must be a U.S Citizen to be considered for a security clearance.

  • Foundational knowledge of programming, software development, data handling, and AI/ML concepts, demonstrated through coursework, academic or personal projects, internships, research, or related work experience.

  • Basic technical knowledge of applied AI, AI/ML workflows, LLM tools or APIs, software services, or developer environments, with the ability to learn approved tools and apply established practices to assigned work.

  • Ability to implement and test a defined technical task, document results, and use existing examples or procedures to solve basic problems with guidance from more senior staff.

  • Ability to receive and apply feedback, ask questions and check understanding, communicate technical information and progress clearly, and collaborate effectively with team members and users.

  • Ability to work a hybrid schedule with a minimum on-site presence of 3 days per-week.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Coursework, projects, internships, or research in applied AI, machine learning, or a related area.

  • Exposure to LLM APIs, enterprise AI tools, agentic workflows, retrieval-enabled systems, or AI-assisted software development through academic, personal, internship, or work projects.

  • Hands-on practice building or testing an AI-enabled application, prompt workflow, API integration, retrieval prototype, or data-processing component using Python or another programming language.

  • Experience explaining technical concepts, demonstrating a tool, preparing tutorials, tutoring, or helping peers learn software or AI capabilities.

  • Familiarity with version control, automated testing, containers, cloud services, or software delivery practices through coursework or project work.

  • Awareness of access controls, data sensitivity, secure computing practices, and the importance of using approved AI tools and environments.

  • Experience preparing, cleaning, organizing, or retrieving data for analysis or AI projects, with attention to quality and appropriate data handling.

  • Experience creating clear README files, setup instructions, reusable examples, or test cases that help others understand and reproduce technical work.

  • Active Secret clearance.

About the company

At MITRE, your passion fuels work that impacts our nation and improves lives. This is where your skills strengthen national security, cybersecurity, health, transportation, and citizen services. We’re a nonprofit engineering, applied research, and advanced technology organization working in the public interest. With objectivity and integrity at our core, we lead federally funded research and development centers for U.S. government agencies - collaborating with industry and academia to deliver integrated, high-impact solutions that advance our nation’s health, security, and prosperity. Our people tackle the toughest technical challenges, supported by competitive benefits, meaningful career development, and a culture of innovation, collaboration, and technical excellence. Choose MITRE for a career with purpose - and help shape the future.

Mission Computing is a new division being established to accelerate how MITRE turns technical possibility into mission capability. We’re bringing together supercomputing, AI services, secure lab and cloud infrastructure, and modern engineering tooling, all organized as a front-line function that shapes how teams across MITRE build, experiment, and deliver. The AI and Mission Enablement department is the applied AI and services adoption arm of Mission Computing. Its role is to make MITRE’s AI and mission platform investments practical for mission work: giving staff usable paths to approved tools, workflows, reusable patterns, data integrations, development environments, hands-on experimentation, and high-touch technical support. The department helps teams move beyond isolated experiments into secure, repeatable ways of using platforms and computing environments in all aspects of their work.

As Mission Computing stands up, AI and Mission Enablement will sit between infrastructure and practice. The department will work with platform teams, mission users, laboratories, Enterprise Technology, Information Security Services, and AI communities across MITRE to standardize how capabilities are discovered, integrated, taught, supported, and scaled across approved data and security environments. Its work is to make AI and platforms easier to learn, easier to trust, easier to connect to MITRE workflows, and easier to apply responsibly to mission problems. AI Enablement is the group that turns platforms, APIs, agents, data workflows, secure compute, and developer experiences into a working foundation for a mission-centric MITRE.
