Software Engineering Specialist

Secure Contracts is an organization within BT designed to serve the UK Government. We are here to underpin public safety and national security. You will be working on modernising services to government and delivering new contract capabilities as well as maintaining the security posture of existing contracts and services. With the launch of Sovereign Products and a push into defence industries the responsibilities of Secure Contracts is expanding. This role will set the architecture and technical guidance in the software engineering space and bring architectural leadership and guidance to our existing team. The role will be there to support the solution design manager in a technical capacity. This is a hybrid “hands on technical and Architecture” role that will support winning new business, influencing key stakeholders (internal and external) and technically working with and leading the technical strategy for the engineering team. What you’ll be doing

1. Delivers deep technical and repeatable solutions that achieve customer requirements driving positive outcomes
2. Guides partnerships with business and operational stakeholders to conduct business and technical discovery
3. Implements robust recommendations, proposals and scope of work documents for group engagements while also identifying critical dependencies and gaps
4. Delivers the creation of innovative and repeatable solution architectures to resolve a range of complex solution architecture problems and meet agreed requirements
5. Facilitates business stakeholders’ understanding of capabilities and the transformative power of group products, services and technology
6. Drives the team culture of enhancing the solution architect team’s knowledge, methodologies and customer-facing collateral
7. Executes alignment with Enterprise Architecture guardrails and solution patterns
8. Contributes to thought leadership and provides advice on a specific set of technologies to help senior leadership shape the long-term direction of solution architecture strategy
9. Delivers complex, strategic initiatives that are a part of the company’s overall commercial Strategy
10. Champions, continuously develops and shares with team knowledge on emerging trends and changes in solution architecture
11. Mentors other solution architects, helping to improve the team’s abilities by acting as a technical resource

• System Design and Architecture: Proven experience designing and governing scalable, secure and highly available enterprise solutions. Ability to lead technical discovery workshops, elicit and capture requirements, evaluate architectural options, apply recognised architectural frameworks and patterns, and establish engineering standards across multiple teams.
• Secure-by-Design & Regulated Environments: Proven experience delivering solutions within highly regulated, security-sensitive or compliance-driven environments. Strong understanding of secure-by-design principles, OWASP, threat modelling, identity and access management, least-privilege principles and non-functional requirements.
• Software Engineering Authority: Extensive software engineering background with mastery of modern development practices, code quality standards, automated testing, CI/CD and technical governance. Ability to mentor engineers and provide technical decision-making authority across the engineering function.

Desirable Skills / Experience

• Debugging and Troubleshooting: Exceptional skills in identifying and fixing complex issues across the stack.
• Data Structures & Algorithms: Using complex data structures to optimize application performance.
• DevOps & Infrastructure: Experience with CI/CD pipelines, Infrastructure as Code, containerisation, observability and platform automation. Experience of multi-tenanted, cloud-native, distributed or microservices-based architectures.
• Experience working within government, defence, telecommunications, financial services, utilities or other highly regulated environments.
• CISP, CISSP, TOGAF, Azure/AWS Architecture certifications or demonstrable equivalent experience.
