Job description
The Senior Business Intelligence Developer independently designs and owns complex, high-visibility BI reports and solutions, and the semantic models that support them. The position leads technical discovery, designs governed semantic models, develops advanced DAX calculations and Power Query scripts, implements security and deployment processes, optimizes solution performance, and follows team standards for Power BI development. The role partners with stakeholders, project managers, data owners, analysts, and Data Engineers to deliver scalable analytical products. The ideal candidate will have extensive reporting and semantic modeling experience, with enough knowledge of data engineering to effectively collaborate with data engineers., Power BI Solution Ownership (30%)
- Design, develop, and support analytics solutions within cloud-based business intelligence and data platforms, including Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud Platform (GCP).
- Architect cloud-native reporting and analytics solutions that align with enterprise architecture, security, governance, and performance standards.
- Leverage Microsoft Fabric, Power BI Service, Azure and Google Cloud services, and related cloud technologies to deliver enterprise reporting, self-service analytics, and data exploration capabilities.
- Support solution deployment through cloud-based environments and deployment pipelines.
Semantic Modeling and Advanced Analytics (30%)
- Design and optimize semantic models that support cloud-scale analytics workloads.
- Develop governed analytical assets that enable consistent reporting across cloud-based data platforms.
- Collaborate with Cloud and Data Engineers to align semantic model design with enterprise cloud architecture and data platform standards.
Cloud Analytics Platform, Data Integration, and Performance (30%)
- Partner with Cloud and Data Engineers to integrate curated datasets from cloud data warehouses, lakehouses, and enterprise data platforms across Azure, Google Cloud, and other supported environments.
- Contribute to the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of cloud-based analytics services and solutions.
- Evaluate cloud data architecture, connectivity methods, refresh strategies, and platform performance to ensure reliable business intelligence delivery.
- Monitor and optimize cloud resource utilization, semantic model performance, query efficiency, refresh operations, and capacity management.
- Contribute to cloud governance, security, deployment, monitoring, and operational best practices.
- Participate in cloud solution design reviews and recommend improvements to scalability, resiliency, and maintainability.
- Support enterprise adoption of modern cloud analytics capabilities and emerging technologies.
Requirements, Documentation & Technical Collaboration (10%)
- Provide technical leadership and guidance on cloud analytics technologies, platform capabilities, governance, and architectural best practices.
- Serve as a subject matter expert for cloud-based business intelligence solutions and enterprise reporting platforms.
- Advise leadership on cloud analytics strategy, platform optimization, and sustainable support models., Hybrid - this role is eligible for a hybrid schedule of three (3) days per week on campus and as needed for in-person meetings.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems, data analytics, engineering, or a related field.
- Substitution: A combination of education and related technical/military/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for a bachelor’s degree on a year-for-year basis.
- Two (2) years of progressively responsible experience with BI development, analytics engineering, semantic modeling, and data warehousing., * Advanced experience with Power BI Desktop and Power BI Service, including SQL, DAX, Power Query (M), semantic modeling, and dimensional data modeling.
- Experience with advanced BI architecture and administration, including deployment pipelines, dataflows, gateways, row-level and object-level security (RLS/OLS), calculation groups, composite models, and performance optimization.
- Experience with Microsoft Fabric, SSAS Tabular, Azure DevOps, Git, PBIP, CI/CD practices, automated testing, and release management.
- Experience independently leading complex BI solutions through requirements gathering, design, development, testing, deployment, and production support; including establishing standards, conducting code reviews, and mentoring technical staff.
- Experience working with regulated or complex data environments such as higher education, healthcare, research, finance, or similar industries; experience in a university environment preferred.

- Skill in consulting on technical approaches, evaluating design alternatives, and communicating recommendations to stakeholders and project teams.
- Skill in prioritizing work, managing multiple commitments, and delivering results within established timelines.
- Ability to build collaborative relationships and work effectively with cross-functional teams and stakeholders.
- Ability to exercise sound technical judgment and make independent decisions within established guidelines.
- Ability to maintain a high level of accountability, attention to detail, and commitment to continuous improvement.
- Ability to explain complex technical trade-offs and influence decision-making across varying levels of the organization.

There are many additional perks & programs with the CU Advantage., The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as $89,926 to $120,501.
The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University’s good-faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position may be eligible for overtime compensation, depending on the level.
