Job description

  • Research and develop algorithms that optimize utilization in the Virtual Power Plant through smarter aggregation, disaggregation, and dispatch
  • Model, implement, and iterate on real-time dispatch optimization and control problems for Flexa’s residential battery portfolio
  • Design and run experiments to evaluate dispatch policies and attribute outcomes against forecasts and market behaviour
  • Take models from research into reliable production: implement, deliver, and monitor well-engineered, data-driven solutions in our real-time systems on AWS
  • Opportunity to guide and develop more junior colleagues through design review, code review, and structured feedback
  • Be part of a cross-functional team of data scientists, software engineers, and other teams across Flexa’s partner ecosystem

Requirements

Do you have experience in Research?, * University degree in a data-driven or analytical field (Operations Research, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, Physics, Energy Engineering, or similar quantitative discipline)

  • 5+ years industry experience in applied data science
  • Mathematical optimization / OR experience. Hands-on with LP/MILP and MPC-style receding-horizon methods
  • Strong analytics and experimentation discipline - designing experiments and analysing results carefully, including counterfactual and regret reasoning
  • Energy domain background - markets, batteries, grid; understanding how the physical asset, the market, and the grid interact
  • Proficiency in Python and software engineering practices: testing, code quality, code review, CI/CD, monitoring, and modular code design
  • Proven track record of taking models from research into reliable production on AWS (or comparable cloud)
  • Excellent English communication and interpersonal skills
  • Cross-functional collaboration mindset across data scientists, software engineers, and partner-company stakeholders
  • Independent research experience, excellent analytical skills with strong attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced team environment are essential., * Direct experience optimizing battery dispatch, demand response, or aggregated DER portfolios
  • Hardware or embedded experience, and comfort with real-time / low-latency systems
  • General machine learning experience - supervised learning, model evaluation, and knowing when ML is (and isn’t) the right tool alongside optimization
  • Control background - MPC, receding-horizon control, or state-space methods for time-coupled decision-making

Benefits & conditions

  • Virtual Share Options: We offer virtual share options to all our employees
  • Professional Development: Annual development budget of 3,000 € for coachings, trainings, books, etc
  • Health & Sport Subsidy: Company subsidised sports facilities membership or Public Transportation Subsidy: Monthly subsidy for your public transport ticket

  • Lunch/Dinner Allowance Vouchers: Allowance for meals on working days as digital meal vouchers

About the company

I’m Sebastien Schikora, serving as the CTO at Flexa since the beginning. My diverse career journey has provided me with a range of experiences with a deep dive in the energy industry and the functioning of the grid specifically. In the last years, I was:

  • CTO at KONUX from September 2018 to April 2022, where I played a pivotal role in shaping the company’s tech landscape and products.
  • Sr. Manager at Tesla from November 2015 to July 2018, leading the development of energy storage systems and mobile apps.
  • Vice President of Product Development at Networked Energy Services (NES) Corporation from October 2014 to November 2015, launching a new company and product line in the grid digitalization space.
  • At Echelon Corporation, I held various roles over six years, including Director of Product Management and Development in the Grid Modernization Division.
  • Before my endeavors in the Energy Industry I was working for Hewlett Packard in the Enterprise Software group for a little over 10 years.

I’m all about pushing the boundaries of technology and driving progress in our industry. I spent the majority of my career in the Silicon Valley in California and apply a lot of the methods and drive to my workplace here in Munich.

Our team is the basis of our success, and I’m dedicated to fostering a collaborative, innovative and goal driven work environment.

If you’re ready to be a part of our international crew and share our vision for groundbreaking tech solutions, I encourage you to explore opportunities within our organization.

Thanks for considering joining us, and I look forward to the possibility of working together to achieve remarkable things., Flexa, a Joint Venture between Enpal and Entrix, is chartered with delivering a Virtual Power Plant (VPP) delivering exceptional energy cost savings while supporting the transition to a 100% renewable electricity future.

The combination of delivering complete residential energy systems at great cost with savvy market participation in several revenue streams sets us up to deliver real world customer savings while improving customer satisfaction enjoying the advantages of a fully electrified and energy producing home.

Through a deep integration into the installed hardware and a direct connection to the customer interfaces, Flexa’s solution controls the energy assets (such as EV, heat pump, home storage and others) of the entire Enpal energy community with an exceptional level of accuracy, speed, transparency, and thus customer satisfaction. With intelligent real-time dispatching algorithms, Flexa maximizes Enpal customers’ usable flexibility and its returns on energy markets including costs, such as grid fees, asset degradation.
