Senior Software Engineer - Java / Embedded Systems / IOT

Senior Software Engineer with strong Java, Spring Boot and Kafka or distributed systems experience, alongside knowledge of IoT, embedded systems or firmware, is required to join an innovative, well-funded early-stage technology start-up developing next-generation SaaS solutions for the renewable energy sector., Experience in one or more of these areas would be particularly attractive; you don’t need to tick every box. What you’ll do as a Senior Software Engineer

• Design and develop scalable Java / Spring Boot microservices and APIs.
• Build reliable distributed systems using Kafka and event-driven architectures.
• Develop software supporting IoT connectivity, device integration and data processing.
• Contribute to device-to-cloud communication and integration with connected hardware.
• Work with Docker, Kubernetes and cloud-native technologies.
• Collaborate with engineers and product stakeholders on technical design, architecture and delivery.
• Contribute to code reviews, automated testing and continuous improvement.

We’re particularly interested in Java Engineers with experience or an interest in IoT, embedded technologies and connected devices, who enjoy solving complex engineering challenges. Key skills required for the Senior Software Engineer

• Strong Java and Spring Boot experience, building scalable applications, APIs and microservices.
• Kafka or distributed systems experience, including event-driven architectures and asynchronous messaging.
• Good knowledge of Docker and Kubernetes, including containerisation and cloud-native deployments.
• Experience developing resilient, scalable SaaS applications, ideally using AWS.
• Strong software engineering fundamentals, automated testing and continuous delivery.
• Full Stack development experience, ideally with React, would be beneficial.

Particularly desirable - IoT, embedded systems and connected devices:

• Embedded systems or firmware development, including embedded Linux environments.
• IoT applications, connecting sensors, hardware and physical devices to cloud platforms.
• Raspberry Pi or similar devices, including edge computing and IoT gateways.
• Communication protocols such as MQTT and Modbus (TCP/RTU) or other industrial protocols.
• Experience with network-connected devices, telemetry, device connectivity and data ingestion.
• Exposure to industrial equipment, smart meters, energy assets or connected infrastructure., This role would particularly suit a Senior Java / Spring Boot Engineer with Kafka or distributed systems experience, knowledge of Docker and Kubernetes, and exposure to IoT, embedded systems, firmware, Raspberry Pi, MQTT or Modbus.
