Job description

Systech is looking for an experienced Systems Engineer who can take ownership of complex technical work across a wide range of business environments.

This isn’t simply the next level of Help Desk. Our Systems Engineers design, implement, migrate, configure, and improve the systems our clients depend on. You’ll work on infrastructure projects, new client deployments, migrations, advanced technical escalations, and the occasional problem that refuses to fit neatly into one technology.

You’ll need real engineering experience coming into the position. We don’t expect you to know every platform in our environment on your first day, but we do expect you to have the technical foundation and professional experience necessary to learn unfamiliar platforms quickly and make sound decisions in production environments. What You’ll Do

You’ll work across multiple client environments, taking responsibility for engineering and advanced technical work that includes:

  • Designing and implementing network, server, cloud, identity, Microsoft 365, virtualization, backup, endpoint, and security solutions.
  • Leading technical portions of new client onboarding, infrastructure deployments, migrations, replacements, and upgrades.
  • Performing technical discovery and evaluating existing client environments.
  • Developing technical scopes of work, identifying required labor and technical resources, and helping ensure proposed solutions accurately reflect the work required.
  • Troubleshooting complex issues that cross endpoints, networks, identity, servers, cloud services, applications, virtualization, and security.
  • Planning significant technical changes with consideration for dependencies, business impact, security, sequencing, validation, and rollback.
  • Creating the technical documentation necessary for another technician to understand and support what you’ve implemented.
  • Providing advanced technical guidance and knowledge transfer to Level 1 and Level 2 Help Desk Technicians.

You’ll also work directly with clients. That means asking good discovery questions, explaining complicated technical subjects without making them unnecessarily complicated, communicating during projects and outages, and helping clients understand what we’re doing and why.

Technology You’ll Work With

Our client environments include technology such as:

  • Ubiquiti UniFi and other managed networking platforms
  • Microsoft 365, Entra ID, Intune, and Azure
  • Windows Server and Active Directory
  • Proxmox, VMware ESXi, Hyper-V, and other virtualization platforms
  • Managed backup and recovery systems
  • Endpoint security and EDR
  • RMM, PSA, monitoring, and documentation platforms
  • PowerShell and other administrative and automation tools

Your previous environment doesn’t need to match ours exactly. We care about the underlying technical knowledge and experience that allows you to move between platforms. Strong networking fundamentals transfer between vendors, virtualization concepts transfer between hypervisors, and experienced engineers learn new management platforms., Our Systems Engineers work across the company, not in a technical silo.

You’ll work with Help Desk technicians when an issue requires deeper technical expertise, Account Management when a client needs a technical solution scoped or a project developed, and Field Services when an implementation requires work onsite. You’ll also work with other technical staff when a problem crosses systems or specialties.

You’ll help make the people around you better by explaining technical reasoning, documenting what you’ve built, and sharing what you’ve learned. As one of our more experienced technical resources, other members of the team will rely on your knowledge and technical judgment when working through difficult problems.

What We Expect From Each Other

We take the work seriously without believing we have to take ourselves seriously every minute of the day.

We’re a smaller technical organization in Southern Oregon. People know each other, departments work together, and your contribution is visible. You’ll have access to the people making technical and business decisions rather than working several organizational layers away from them.

In return, we expect people to be dependable, communicate, take ownership of their work, help their coworkers, treat clients well, and continue improving.

Our Help Desk operates from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and our clients depend on us throughout the business day. Being on time, prepared, and reliable matters here.

Requirements

This is an experienced technical position. You should already be comfortable taking responsibility for production infrastructure and independently working through complex technical problems.

We also expect experienced technical professionals to remain coachable. Nobody here knows everything, and technical experience doesn’t eliminate the need to learn from other people., * Demonstrated capability to troubleshoot complex environments independently and to design, implement, migrate, or materially modify production technology, including experience beyond Level 1 / Level 2 support

  • Advanced troubleshooting and root cause analysis skills across networking, Microsoft 365, servers, and cloud systems
  • Working knowledge of network infrastructure, server configurations, and IT security standards
  • Experience designing, implementing, and configuring technical solutions within defined standards
  • Experience using a ticketing system, RMM tool, and PSA software
  • Ability to produce complete and defensible technical documentation
  • Ability to communicate technical information clearly to technical and non-technical audiences
  • Experience mentoring or providing technical guidance to junior technicians
  • Ability to evaluate technical dependencies, risk, service impact, implementation sequencing, validation, and rollback requirements
  • Ability to develop and validate technical scopes of work and labor estimates based on the work required
  • Valid driver’s license and the ability to drive to client sites

Preferred Skills

  • Professional IT certifications such as Microsoft certifications, CompTIA Security+/Network+, ITIL, or equivalent
  • Three or more years of experience in a technical support, systems administration, or engineering role (preferred, not a screening cutoff)
  • Experience with cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud)
  • Experience with scripting or automation (PowerShell preferred)
  • Experience working for a Managed Service Provider or IT support business
  • Prior experience as a senior onsite technical resource in a branch or client environment
  • Experience with Ubiquiti UniFi or comparable managed networking platforms; WatchGuard and other supported platforms
  • Experience with Proxmox, VMware ESXi, Hyper-V, or comparable virtualization platforms; managed backup and recovery; endpoint security/EDR, Employment is contingent upon successful completion of required background checks and obtaining and maintaining CJIS clearance., We’re looking for someone who already has meaningful engineering and infrastructure experience. You should be able to troubleshoot complex environments independently, take responsibility for significant technical changes, and point to systems you’ve personally helped implement, migrate, replace, or materially improve.

Your experience doesn’t need to match our technology stack exactly, but the engineering foundation needs to be there. We’ll help you learn our specific tools, standards, and client environments.

If you have the technical depth to do the work, the judgment to know how it should be done, and the communication skills to work effectively with the people depending on it, we’d like to hear from you.

About the company

Systech provides paid training time, access to a variety of online technical training resources, and opportunities for company-paid industry certifications. You’ll also be exposed to different businesses, technologies, infrastructure designs, and technical problems across our client base.
