Job description
- You’ll have the unique opportunity to build a backend that serves millions of passengers every day.
- You’ll join a forward-thinking DevOps team where you have the freedom to contribute ideas and experiment with new technologies.
- Our teams have end-to-end responsibility for the entire process: from discovery, user research and design to development and continuous improvement. As teams, we also run and host our own backends: “You build it, you run it, you love it.”
What you’ll do as a Backend Developer at NS
As a Backend Developer, you’ll be responsible for developing and maintaining the systems that support the NS app. You’ll build scalable and reliable services that meet the highest quality standards.
Your main focus will be on functionality that supports our service strategy and contributes to increasing self-service and reducing the need for customer contact. At NS, our goal is to offer services as proactively as possible: relevant to passengers and available at exactly the moment they need them.
- You develop and maintain backend services in TypeScript, deployed on AWS.
- You work closely with the Business Analyst, Product Owner and other developers to translate functional and business requirements into technical solutions.
- You write structured, clean code, address technical debt and resolve security vulnerabilities where necessary.
- You improve the quality, reliability and robustness of our backend by working test-driven and understanding how monitoring tools such as Datadog can be used effectively.
- You stay up to date with the latest developments in backend technologies and share your knowledge with both the team and the wider developer community.
Hier ga je werken
You’ll work from our head office near Utrecht Central Station as well as from home, as part of a multidisciplinary DevOps team. You’ll work alongside another Backend Developer, an iOS Developer and an Android Developer. The team also includes a UX/UI Designer, Scrum Master and Product Owner.
Within the Service domain, there is extensive collaboration with other teams, for example teams that maintain services for the Forgotten Check-out process and teams working on the JeNS chatbot.
Together, we brainstorm innovative solutions, collaborate closely and explore new possibilities both within and beyond our own areas of expertise. And, of course, you’ll spend plenty of time doing what you enjoy most: developing. We support you with the latest technologies.
Our team is one of seven teams jointly responsible for components of the NS app. Backend Developers meet every week to present their work and discuss improvements that benefit multiple teams. These meetings give you the opportunity to make an impact and help shape our technical direction.
Our developer culture values everyone’s input. Nothing is “set in stone.”
The codebase
Our backend currently consists of serverless applications deployed on AWS. We are actively working towards stateless front-end applications by using a BFF (Backend for Frontend) architecture.
There is also a strong demand for an app that can adapt to passengers as they travel. To achieve this, we use applications outside our own team for content and personalisation. A versatile backend is therefore essential to providing excellent service.
There is a constant challenge to innovate and optimise. We work with a DevOps mindset and aim to make our services as efficient and reliable as possible. You’ll have plenty of room to contribute your own ideas and experiment with new technologies.
Requirements
You enjoy learning and pick up new things quickly. You identify opportunities for improvement and know how to involve others in making them happen.
Important aspects of Agile working, such as collaboration, responding to change and delivering value in short cycles, fit naturally with the way you work. You have strong communication skills, take ownership and are confident in making decisions.
Your primary experience is with TypeScript. You’re also willing to learn other technologies and broaden your technical knowledge. Experience with both is considered an advantage.
What else you bring
- You have a higher professional education level (Dutch HBO level) or equivalent level of working and thinking.
- You have experience developing serverless applications on AWS and deploying applications using CDK.
- You’re willing to learn other technology stacks and expand your knowledge.
- You’re enthusiastic, have a strong sense of responsibility and look beyond your own area of expertise.
- Team spirit. Your flexibility and ability to collaborate make the team stronger.
- You have experience writing automated tests, including unit, integration and end-to-end tests.
- You’re interested in the latest developments in backend technologies.
You are able to communicate effectively in Dutch or English.
It’s a plus if you have experience with
- CI/CD
- BFF architecture
- DevOps and Agile ways of working
- Cloud services, specifically AWS
- Refactoring legacy code
- Test-driven and data-driven development, * A background screening, including a Certificate of Conduct (VOG), is part of the recruitment process. This also includes signing integrity and confidentiality agreements.
Benefits & conditions
- A salary in Scale 60, ranging from €3,743 to €6,491 gross per month (based on a 36-hour workweek and depending on your experience)
- The opportunity to work from home and enjoy flexible working hours (by mutual agreement)
- A 36-hour working week
- A 3% year-end bonus, 8% holiday allowance, and an excellent pension scheme
- A permanent contract after one year, subject to good performance
- Free travel by train in 2nd class; travel in 1st class is available for a small personal contribution
- Your family can travel free of charge during off-peak hours
- 144 hours of statutory leave (based on full-time employment), plus additional leave depending on age (at least one extra week)
- The option to exchange three Christian public holidays for three non-Christian public holidays
- Discounts on European rail travel after one year of employment with NS
- A flexible benefits plan, including options such as a bike scheme, additional pension contributions, or extra vacation days
