Job description

Perfect role for a mid professional looking to grow their Defence & Government career in Southampton.

Defence programmes live or die on the systems holding them together, and right now a growing technology company in Southampton needs someone who can own that responsibility properly. This is a startup built around fast decision-making and real accountability, working on programmes that support national security outcomes. If you want your work to matter beyond a sprint board, this Systems Engineer (SC Cleared) role is worth a serious look.

Here’s what you’ll be doing:

Design, integrate and test complex systems across the full engineering lifecycle, from concept through to deployment

Work directly with government and defence stakeholders to translate operational requirements into workable technical solutions

Produce and maintain technical documentation, including system specifications, interface control documents and test evidence

Troubleshoot integration issues across hardware and software boundaries, often under time pressure

Support verification and validation activities, ensuring systems meet contractual and regulatory requirements

Collaborate with cross-functional teams including software, hardware and security specialists on a daily basis

Requirements

Active SC Clearance (essential, no exceptions given the nature of this Systems Engineer (SC Cleared) role)

A degree in systems engineering, electronics, computer science or a related discipline, or equivalent hands-on experience

Solid experience with systems engineering methodologies (MBSE experience is a strong plus)

Familiarity with defence standards and requirements management tools such as DOORS

Comfortable working independently and making judgement calls without waiting for permission

Clear written and verbal communication, particularly when explaining technical detail to non-technical stakeholders

Benefits & conditions

£45,500 to £56,500, depending on experience

Hybrid working from the Southampton office, with genuine flexibility around hours

Equity in a company that’s still shaping how it works, not just where you sit

A dedicated learning and development budget to keep building your expertise

A flat structure where your ideas reach decision-makers directly, not through five layers of management
