Job description

Security Clearance: Anticipated DOE Q clearance (requires U.S. citizenship and a federal background investigation) Drug Test: Required for external applicant(s) selected for this position (includes testing for use of marijuana), We have an opening for a Software Engineer to help develop innovative software for ASD Scorpius, one-of-a-kind next-generation linear induction accelerator that will generate multiple, precisely timed, high-energy X-ray images during subcritical experiments, providing scientists with unprecedented experimental data to better understand material behavior under extreme conditions. You will work at the intersection of software, data, controls, and experimental science, developing intuitive data-visualization and user-interface capabilities that help scientists and engineers’ access, understand, and interact with complex accelerator and experimental data. You will help build software that connects data-recall systems, databases, and accelerator controls, transforming large volumes of technical information into useful, accessible tools for the multi-disciplinary team commissioning and operating this unique system. You will work alongside experienced software developers, controls engineers, scientists, and project personnel and have the opportunity to see your software become part of a major experimental capability from development through integration and commissioning.

This is an opportunity to begin your career working on challenging, mission-critical software where the connection between code and real-world engineering is immediate. The software approaches and experience developed on Scorpius will also be applicable to other major experimental systems and future national-security capabilities at LLNL. This position is in the National Security Engineering Division (NSED) within the Engineering Directorate.

This position requires full-time on-site presence due to the nature of the work.

You will

  • Develop and maintain software applications and graphical user interfaces for visualization, retrieval, and presentation of engineering and experimental data.
  • Implement well-defined software features that interface with data sources, databases, application programming interfaces (APIs), and controls-related software.
  • Apply fundamental software engineering concepts, techniques, practices, and procedures to solve problems using standard development methodologies.
  • Develop software components using appropriate programming languages, frameworks, and development tools in accordance with established project requirements and coding practices.
  • Implement data-processing and data-recall functionality to support efficient access to engineering and experimental information.
  • Develop and execute unit, integration, and automated tests to verify software functionality, identify defects, and support reliable software operation.
  • Participate in software design discussions, code reviews, configuration management, documentation, and other established software-development lifecycle activities.
  • Collaborate with engineers, scientists, software developers, and project personnel to understand requirements, communicate technical progress, and integrate software components into larger engineering systems.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related science, engineering, or technical field, or equivalent level of demonstrated knowledge.
  • Fundamental knowledge of software engineering and computer science concepts, techniques, practices, and procedures, including object-oriented programming, data structures, software design, and software development lifecycle practices.
  • Fundamental knowledge and experience applying one or more modern programming languages such as Python, Java, Kotlin, C/C++, C#, JavaScript/TypeScript, or similar languages to software-development assignments.
  • Knowledge of developing software applications that interact with databases, structured data, APIs, or other software services.
  • Knowledge of graphical user interface, web application, or data-visualization development concepts and techniques.
  • Experience using standard software-development tools and practices such as version control, testing, debugging, and collaborative software-development workflows.
  • Experience applying standard technical principles, theories, concepts, and techniques to well-defined software-development problems.
  • Sufficient verbal and written communication skills to collaborate effectively in a team environment and present and explain technical information, * Experience developing graphical user interfaces or interactive web applications using technologies such as React, JavaScript/TypeScript, or comparable frameworks.
  • Experience working with SQL databases, REST APIs, data-processing pipelines, or scientific/engineering data.
  • Experience with Linux development environments, Git-based workflows, automated testing, CI/CD, containers, or related modern software-development tools.
