Job description

Job Description: We are looking for a talented, hands-on Software Engineer to develop and enhance software applications, secure information exchange capabilities, modeling and simulation tools, and engineering prototypes supporting next-generation aviation systems.

Our current and emerging work includes airspace integration of higher airspace operations (HAO) and space launch/reentry operations, air traffic management (ATM) / Communications, Navigation, and Surveillance (CNS) modernization, and simulation of advanced aviation operations.

This role combines software development with opportunities to apply cybersecurity, secure communications, data engineering, and emerging technologies. You will work alongside aviation experts and systems engineers to translate operational concepts into software that accurately reflects aviation data, procedures, and requirements., * Design, develop, maintain, and enhance software applications and engineering prototypes supporting aviation and autonomous systems.

  • Develop APIs, data models, and software interfaces that enable information exchange across distributed systems and services.
  • Evaluate and implement secure communication capabilities, including authentication, authorization, digital signatures, encryption, and data integrity verification.
  • Support the development of digital identity and trust mechanisms for aviation stakeholders, including aircraft, operators, services, and authorized government entities.
  • Contribute to prototyping and evaluating network-based aircraft identification, cooperative information services, and secure data-sharing concepts.
  • Develop and extend modeling and simulation tools involving aircraft trajectories, operational scenarios, geospatial analysis, and airspace visualization.
  • Integrate software components and external data sources, and implement data processing, validation, and visualization capabilities.
  • Apply modern software engineering practices, including modular design, automated testing, debugging, version control, and documentation.
  • Collaborate with aviation subject matter experts to translate operational requirements into working software and validate domain-specific assumptions, such as altitude/flight-level conventions, units, coordinate systems, and timing.
  • Explore opportunities to apply AI/ML, intelligent automation, and emerging technologies to aviation software applications.

Requirements

We are particularly interested in candidates who bring familiarity with aviation operations, terminology, or software applications alongside experience developing secure, interoperable software systems. Demonstrable experience in emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML), is also valuable., * Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.

  • 3+ years of professional software development experience.
  • Strong proficiency in Python, including experience developing and maintaining software applications.
  • Experience developing APIs, backend services, data processing applications, or distributed software systems.
  • Practical understanding of secure software development principles, including authentication, authorization, data protection, and secure communication.
  • Experience with modeling, simulation, scientific computing, geospatial applications, or other data-intensive software development.
  • Familiarity with software architecture, data structures, application integration, and common development tools such as Git and Linux.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with a distributed engineering team.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to understand and apply domain-specific terminology, data conventions, and operational requirements in collaboration with aviation experts.
  • Authorization to work in the United States and ability to meet applicable FAA Public Trust background investigation requirements for assigned work., * Prior software or engineering experience in aviation, ATM, UAS, or other aerospace applications, including familiarity with aviation terminology and operational practices.
  • Supporting U.S. federal agencies or government contractors, particularly the FAA, including requirements-driven development, technical reviews, documentation, and customer deliverables.
  • Digital identity, trust frameworks, and cybersecurity technologies, such as PKI, digital signatures, authentication, authorization, and secure information exchange.
  • NAS data familiarity such as FAA SWIM infrastructure and data
  • Aviation data models such as FIXM or AIXM
  • Trajectory-Based Operations (TBO) or FF-ICE
  • Cloud (AWS/Azure/GCP), workflow orchestration, BI dashboards
  • Applying AI/ML/LLM to aviation datasets (feature engineering, guardrails)
  • Publications, open-source contributions, or patents

You don’t need experience in all these areas. We value strong programming fundamentals, practical engineering experience, curiosity, and the ability to learn and contribute across different technical domains., * professional software development : 3 years (Required)

  • Hands-on Python and simulation: 3 years (Required)
  • Aviation and government : 1 year (Preferred)
  • Secure systems and digital trust : 1 year (Preferred)
