Job description

Data Machines seeks a motivated and experienced Agentic Applications Engineer to join our team supporting the development and deployment of cutting-edge artificial intelligence applications for U.S. Government missions.

The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience developing AI-powered applications, integrating advanced AI models, and working within Linux and Kubernetes-based environments. This role combines agentic AI, software development, DevOps, and mission-focused engineering to deliver innovative solutions for government customers.

Candidates should have strong problem-solving skills, experience working with modern AI technologies, and the ability to translate complex mission requirements into practical technical solutions.

As a member of the Data Machines engineering team, responsibilities include:

  • Designing, developing, testing, and refining agentic AI applications and workflows using a proprietary agentic platform.
  • Developing applications that leverage frontier AI models to address mission-specific requirements.
  • Building multi-step agentic workflows that integrate AI models, external tools, APIs, data sources, and human interaction.
  • Using Python and shell scripting for application development, automation, integration, testing, and troubleshooting.
  • Developing and maintaining applications within Linux-based environments.
  • Supporting CI/CD automation and development workflows using GitHub, GitLab, or comparable tools.
  • Collaborating directly with U.S. Government sponsors and mission stakeholders to gather requirements, demonstrate capabilities, and refine technical solutions.
  • Evaluating AI model and agent performance, identifying failure modes, and improving application reliability.
  • Documenting system architectures, application workflows, deployment processes, and technical decisions.
  • Researching and evaluating emerging AI models, agentic technologies, and development tools.
  • Collaborating with a remote, distributed engineering team across multiple technical disciplines.
  • Traveling occasionally to meet with government customers and stakeholders.

Requirements

  • Active Top Secret (TS) security clearance.
  • Experience working directly with U.S. Government sponsors, customers, or mission stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated experience incorporating agentic AI technologies into new or existing applications.
  • Proficiency working in Linux-based environments.
  • Working knowledge of Python programming.
  • Experience with shell scripting and command-line tools.
  • Familiarity with Git-based collaborative software development workflows.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills, with the ability to learn new technologies and platforms quickly.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain technical concepts to both technical and nontechnical stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a remote, distributed engineering team.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with frontend or full-stack application development.
  • Linux+, Security+, or comparable technical or cybersecurity certifications.
  • Background in data science, machine learning, statistics, or applied artificial intelligence.
  • Experience with containerization and application deployment using Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Experience with DevOps practices and CI/CD pipelines using GitHub or GitLab.
  • Experience deploying and managing workloads in AWS, Google Cloud Platform (GCP), or Microsoft Azure.
  • Experience developing applications for restricted, disconnected, or air-gapped computing environments.
  • Experience integrating AI applications with enterprise data sources, APIs, retrieval systems, and external tools.
  • Familiarity with Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), embeddings, vector databases, structured outputs, function calling, and agent orchestration.
  • Experience developing automated testing and evaluation frameworks for large language models (LLMs) and agentic applications.
  • Experience working in Impact Level (IL) 2-5 environments., * Relevant technical education or equivalent hands-on experience in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, or a related discipline preferred.
