Job description
A San Diego medical device company is hiring a Senior Embedded Systems Lead to own hardware/firmware system integration for its electromechanical device platform. You’ll lead board bring-up and debug, set technical direction for external design and firmware partners, and mentor a junior engineer. Candidates can come from an electrical engineering or firmware background, as long as they have hands-on experience in the other.
What You’ll Do
- Own system integration across electronics and firmware, from board bring-up through verification
- Lead hardware and firmware debug down to the driver level, using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers and debuggers
- Provide technical direction to, and review the work of, external design firms and firmware partners
- Drive technical decisions independently and communicate tradeoffs across systems, quality and product teams
- Ensure design work complies with design controls, IEC 62304 and IEC 60601-1/-1-2
- Mentor a junior engineer and review their work
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering or a related field
- Medical device development experience under design controls
- IEC 62304 experience (required)
- Hands-on board bring-up and hardware/firmware system integration
- An EE background with solid firmware skills (embedded C, MCU bring-up, driver-level debugging), or a firmware background with real hardware experience
- Experience coordinating technical work with outside vendors or contract design firms
- Ability to work independently and make decisions with minimal oversight
Preferred
- IEC 60601-1 and 60601-1-2 experience
- STM32 and RTOS experience
- Thermal, fluid-control or electromechanical systems
- Familiarity with secure boot/OTA, Embedded UI and firmware CI/CD
