Job description

Our client is looking for an experienced Ruby developer to enhance and extend a customer-facing web application. The application is built entirely in Ruby, with server-rendered HTML views, plain JavaScript, jQuery, and Bootstrap. The client’s long-term goal is to re-platform the application in React. For now, the priority is delivering meaningful enhancements to the current application before year-end. You’ll work in an established codebase, partner with upstream infrastructure teams, and ship improvements quickly and safely.

What You’ll Do

  • Design, build, and deliver enhancements to an existing Ruby-based web application
  • Develop and maintain server-rendered views (ERB/HTML) styled with Bootstrap
  • Write and refactor front-end behavior in plain JavaScript and jQuery
  • Navigate, debug, and improve a mature legacy codebase with minimal ramp-up time
  • Coordinate with upstream infrastructure and integration teams on dependencies, APIs, and deployments
  • Write clean, testable, well-documented code, and take part in code reviews
  • Troubleshoot production issues and keep the application stable while changes ship
  • Identify opportunities that set the application up for a future migration to React

Requirements

  • 5+ years of professional software development experience with Ruby, preferably Ruby on Rails
  • Strong experience with server-rendered web applications (ERB or similar templating)
  • Solid hands-on skills in JavaScript (ES5/ES6), jQuery, HTML5, CSS, and Bootstrap
  • Demonstrated ability to work productively in legacy codebases and deliver under tight timelines
  • Experience with relational databases and SQL (PostgreSQL, MySQL, or similar)
  • Proficiency with Git and collaborative development workflows
  • Experience integrating with REST APIs and upstream or back-end services
  • Strong communication skills and comfort working with cross-functional teams

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with React, or with migrating legacy front ends to a modern JavaScript framework
  • Experience with Ruby testing frameworks such as RSpec or Minitest
  • Experience building multi-step, form-driven, customer-facing web applications
  • Background in financial services, healthcare, or another regulated industry
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and cloud environments
