Job description

As a Java and Database Developer, you will be responsible for developing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and enhancing Java applications and relational database systems that support statewide data exchanges for courts, law enforcement, and justice agencies. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with Java, Spring Boot, SQL development, and enterprise integrations, along with the ability to support production operations, resolve defects, and maintain legacy applications while preserving established business logic, data integrity, and system integrations. Responsibilities:

  • Develop, debug, maintain, and optimize complex SQL queries, stored procedures, triggers, views, and database business logic.
  • Develop and maintain Java applications, Spring Boot services, REST APIs, Spring Batch processes, and database-connected service components.
  • Investigate and resolve production incidents, application defects, data discrepancies, failed integrations, and performance issues, including participation in a weekly on-call rotation.
  • Support enterprise integrations involving IBM MQ or comparable messaging platforms, REST APIs, secure file transfers, notifications, and scheduled processing workflows.
  • Maintain and enhance legacy Java and database applications through targeted fixes, controlled refactoring, and performance improvements while preserving existing business behavior and integration contracts.
  • Improve application reliability, performance, logging, maintainability, availability, and recovery across Java and database components.
  • Perform database query tuning, data reconciliation, data quality validation, and relational database maintenance.
  • Test, debug, review, and validate code and database changes before release in accordance with established procedures.
  • Troubleshoot integration failures and distributed application issues involving service dependencies, retries, timeouts, failover, idempotency, and recovery.
  • Collaborate with business analysts, testers, database administrators, developers, and operations teams to deliver reliable application enhancements.
  • Maintain technical documentation, communicate troubleshooting findings, and take ownership of assigned work through testing and resolution.

Requirements

  • A minimum of two years of professional application development and support experience, preferably three to five years, with significant hands-on experience in Java and relational database development.
  • Experience developing and maintaining Java applications using Spring Boot, REST APIs, Spring Batch, JDBC/JPA, and supporting application configuration.
  • Significant hands-on experience developing, debugging, and maintaining SQL queries, complex stored procedures, triggers, views, joins, scripts, and database business logic.
  • Working knowledge of SAP ASE/Sybase or a comparable relational database platform, including data modeling, data reconciliation, data quality, and query tuning.
  • Experience supporting application integrations, including REST APIs, IBM MQ or comparable enterprise messaging platforms, scheduled jobs, message-based workflows, and secure file transfers.
  • Ability to troubleshoot production issues, diagnose application and data problems, resolve defects, and implement accurate fixes with minimal oversight.
  • Working knowledge of Maven, unit testing, mocking frameworks, code reviews, and software validation practices.
  • Understanding of distributed application concepts, including service dependencies, retries, timeouts, failover, idempotency, and recovery processes.
  • Strong communication, problem-solving, and collaboration skills, with the ability to explain technical findings and take ownership of work through completion.
  • Ability to participate in a weekly on-call rotation and support production operations as needed.

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience with Java 17 or newer, Java 21, Spring Boot 3.x, Spring Web, Spring Batch, JDBC/JPA, REST APIs, and structured application logging.
  • Experience with SAP ASE/Sybase, Microsoft SQL Server T-SQL, Oracle PL/SQL, or another comparable procedural SQL environment.
  • Experience with database connectivity, connection pooling, multiple data source configurations, and production database troubleshooting.
  • Familiarity with integration patterns involving stored procedures, API services, message-based processing, scheduled workflows, email notifications, file publishing, and FTP/SFTP.
  • Experience with Docker containerization and familiarity with Kubernetes or OpenShift.
  • Experience with Git, Jenkins, Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions, or comparable version control and CI/CD automation tools.
  • Familiarity with application monitoring, observability, and distributed tracing tools such as Splunk, ELK Stack, Prometheus, Grafana, or OpenTelemetry.
  • Knowledge of application security technologies and practices, including OAuth2/OIDC, JWT, mutual TLS, certificates, and secrets management.
  • Experience with integration testing and mocking tools such as Testcontainers and WireMock, contract testing, or UI testing tools such as Selenium and Cypress.
  • Familiarity with Linux/Unix shell scripting, PowerShell, load testing, or capacity planning.
  • Exposure to frontend technologies such as React, Angular, Vue, TypeScript, HTML, or CSS for end-to-end application troubleshooting.
  • Experience working in Agile/Scrum environments, using pull request workflows, conducting peer reviews, managing issues, and maintaining technical documentation.
