Job description

Acas is looking for an experienced Senior Content Designer to lead content design work across its digital services.

You will design clear, accessible and effective user experiences through content. This includes understanding user needs, mapping journeys, creating and testing content.

You will lead complex content design work from discovery through to delivery and iteration.

You will manage relationships, timelines and content design processes. You’ll make evidence-based design decisions, and help the team maintain high standards.

You will work closely with subject matter experts, user researchers, other content designers and other digital colleagues. Acas content is co-created with subject matter experts, reviewed by other content designers, tested with users and iterated using evidence.

We’re particularly interested in candidates with strong accessibility experience, including designing and publishing content that meets WCAG standards, alongside experience translating complex technical, policy or legal information into accessible user-centred content.

As a Senior Content Designer your main responsibilities will be to:

  • lead content discovery, using user research, analytics, feedback and other evidence to understand and prioritise user needs
  • map end-to-end user journeys and identify how content can help users complete tasks and take the right next step
  • create content plans, prototypes and structured content before detailed writing begins
  • write and edit complex information in plain English, following Acas style, content patterns and writing standards
  • design content as part of the overall user experience, including page structure, navigation, interactions and calls to action
  • co-create content with subject matter experts, while maintaining responsibility for content design and the user experience
  • plan for user testing and work with user researchers to define scenarios and problem statements
  • design and publish accessible, user-centred content that meets WCAG accessibility standards and supports diverse user needs
  • work openly by sharing drafts, decisions, evidence and updates with the team and stakeholders through sprint reviews and team Slack channels, while working with subject matter experts to develop accessible, user-centred content

Requirements

You must have demonstrable experience of:

  • leading content design work on complex digital services
  • using research, analytics and other evidence to define user needs, map user journeys and design content across end-to-end services
  • writing complex, sensitive, legal or technical information in plain English, applying style guides, content patterns and structured content principles
  • designing accessible web content to WCAG 2.2 Level AA
  • using content management systems and reading and writing basic HTML and CSS
  • working in an agile, multidisciplinary digital team
  • co-creating content with subject matter experts while managing complex stakeholder relationships and resolving differences of opinion

Desirable:

  • working on government or public sector digital services, including application of the Government Service Standard
  • designing employment, legal, regulatory or other complex public information and translating specialist subject matter into user-centred content
  • information architecture, findability and content design for search behaviour
  • using web analytics and search performance data, including Google Analytics
  • contributing to design systems, user interface guidance or reusable content patterns

Please be aware that this role can only be worked within the UK and not Overseas.
