Job description

We’re looking for a hands-on Midweight Developer with DevOps and Hosting focus to join our team for three days per week.

This is a varied role combining software development, cloud infrastructure, hosting management, security and technical support.

You’ll help ensure our clients’ websites and applications run reliably, securely and efficiently, while improving how we develop, deploy and maintain them.

We’re looking for someone who enjoys solving technical problems, takes ownership of their work and is comfortable working across both development and infrastructure.

What you’ll be responsible for:

  1. Reliability, monitoring and service levels * Monitor the availability, performance and reliability of client websites, applications and hosting environments. * Maintain monitoring and alerting for business-critical applications. * Help ensure HUB meets its agreed client service levels and produce monthly performance and uptime reports. * Coordinate technical incident response, investigate root causes and document findings and improvements. * Maintain reliable backups and regularly test disaster recovery procedures.

  2. Security and maintenance * Manage regular security updates and patching across servers, applications and dependencies. * Run vulnerability checks and resolve identified security issues. * Maintain secure access controls, including multi-factor authentication, least-privilege permissions and secure credential management. * Review logging, monitoring and potential security threats. * Manage SSL certificates, domain configurations and renewals. * Support HUB’s Cyber Essentials compliance and respond to client security questionnaires.

  3. Technical support and ticket management * Take ownership of infrastructure, hosting and deployment-related support tickets. * Assess priority, troubleshoot issues and resolve them or coordinate with the appropriate team or supplier. * Communicate clearly with colleagues and clients about technical issues and progress. * Identify recurring issues and introduce improvements to prevent them.

  4. Hosting costs and performance * Review AWS and other hosting costs to identify savings and improve efficiency. * Optimise cloud resources through right-sizing, removing unused services and reviewing appropriate pricing plans. * Work towards agreed hosting cost-reduction targets without compromising reliability. * Investigate and improve the speed and performance of client websites and applications.

  5. DevOps, automation and deployments * Optimise AWS Infrastructure * Build, maintain and improve CI/CD pipelines for client projects. * Support reliable application releases, automated deployments and rollback processes. * Help standardise infrastructure configuration and hosting environments for new projects. * Introduce automation to reduce repetitive tasks and improve development workflows. * Use Infrastructure as Code where appropriate. * Maintain clear technical documentation, deployment instructions and operational runbooks.

  6. Hosting providers and third-party relationships * Manage day-to-day technical relationships with hosting and infrastructure suppliers, including WP Engine, DigitalOcean and AWS. * Work with domain registrars, DNS providers and other third-party or resold-service suppliers. * Liaise with suppliers to resolve hosting, infrastructure, performance and security issues. * Review hosting configurations, renewals, costs and service performance. * Coordinate with clients’ IT teams, external developers and ERP providers when technical integration or infrastructure support is required.

  7. Client development work * Contribute to the development and maintenance of client websites and applications. * Support bug fixes, enhancements, integrations and technical improvements. * Work alongside other developers to ensure applications are built with performance, security and maintainability in mind.

We expect approximately one day per week to focus on client development, with the remaining time dedicated to DevOps, hosting and infrastructure. The balance will vary according to project and support priorities.

  1. Technical advice and project planning * Provide practical advice on hosting, infrastructure, security and deployment approaches for new projects. * Support technical scoping and help identify hosting requirements, risks and ongoing costs. * Explain technical recommendations clearly to colleagues, project managers and non-technical clients.

Requirements

We’re looking for a capable midweight developer who is confident working with hosting environments and has practical DevOps experience.

You’ll ideally have:

  • Commercial experience developing and maintaining websites or web applications.
  • Experience working with cloud hosting platforms, particularly AWS or similar services.
  • WP Engine and WordPress hosting.
  • Practical experience with CI/CD pipelines and deployment automation.
  • Confidence using Git, Linux, command-line tools and server environments.
  • Understanding of DNS, SSL certificates, web servers, databases and hosting configurations.
  • Experience troubleshooting infrastructure, application performance and deployment issues.
  • Familiarity with monitoring, backups, security patching and access management.
  • Good communication skills and a practical approach to managing support requests.
  • The ability to work independently, prioritise tasks and take ownership of technical issues.

Nice to have

Experience with some of the following would be beneficial:

  • DigitalOcean infrastructure and hosting.
  • Docker and containerised applications.
  • GitHub Actions, GitLab CI or similar tools.
  • Terraform or other Infrastructure as Code tools.
  • AWS cost optimisation and cloud resource management.
  • Cyber Essentials or similar security standards.
  • Working in a digital agency or supporting multiple client environments.

You don’t need experience with every technology listed. We’re interested in someone with solid development skills, practical infrastructure experience and the confidence to learn new systems.

Benefits & conditions

This isn’t a traditional development role focused entirely on writing application code, nor is it a dedicated enterprise DevOps engineering position.

You’ll have a mix of responsibilities across development, hosting, infrastructure, automation and technical operations.

You’ll have the opportunity to improve existing processes, build more reliable systems and influence how HUB delivers and supports digital projects.

You’ll work closely with our development and project teams, as well as external technology providers and clients.

Working arrangements and salary

This is a part-time position working three days per week, equivalent to 60% of a full-time role.

Salary: £30,000 to £36,000 per year, depending on experience.

Full-time equivalent salary: £50,000 to £60,000.

The role requires someone comfortable organising their workload and managing priorities within a three-day working week. Clear arrangements for incident escalation outside scheduled working days will be agreed with the team.

About the company

HUB is a digital agency delivering websites, applications and digital platforms for our clients.
