Job description

JET Engineering develops innovative communications and connectivity solutions for customers operating in demanding environments.

Our multidisciplinary teams combine electronics, software and systems engineering to deliver reliable technology from initial development through to deployment.

We are looking for a Senior FPGA & Embedded Software Engineer to take technical ownership of firmware and embedded software for advanced communications and embedded platforms.

This hands-on role covers FPGA digital design, low-level software, high-speed data handling and laboratory integration. The successful candidate will work closely with our hardware engineers to turn designs into robust, testable and maintainable products., * Design and develop FPGA RTL in VHDL and/or Verilog/SystemVerilog for real-time digital processing, data movement and platform control.

  • Develop simulation testbenches, review RTL, manage timing constraints and resolve timing, resource and clock-domain issues.
  • Write embedded C/C++ software and low-level control code to configure devices, manage operating modes and exchange data with FPGA logic.
  • Develop and integrate interfaces between programmable logic, embedded processors, memory and external peripherals.
  • Support embedded Linux integration, including application interfaces, driver-level debugging and reliable transfer of continuous data streams.
  • Implement and optimise data buffering, transfer and processing functions with consideration for latency, throughput and system stability
  • Work alongside electronics, RF and software engineers on prototype bring-up, system integration and laboratory validation.
  • Create Python-based test and diagnostic tools, support automated regression testing and investigate complex hardware/software faults.
  • Maintain clear technical documentation, participate in design reviews and contribute to delivering production-ready solutions.

Requirements

  • Strong commercial FPGA RTL experience in VHDL and/or Verilog/SystemVerilog, with simulation, testbench development, verification and timing closure.
  • Confident use of FPGA design and debug tools such as AMD/Xilinx Vivado, Vitis or comparable development environments.
  • Practical C/C++ programming for embedded platforms, with an understanding of processor-to-FPGA control and data interfaces.
  • Experience with embedded Linux, hardware/software integration, high-speed data handling and fault diagnosis.
  • Hands-on board bring-up and debugging using oscilloscopes, logic analysers, protocol tools or equivalent laboratory equipment.

Programming Languages & Tools:

  • Core languages: VHDL or Verilog/SystemVerilog, embedded C/C++ and Python for scripting, automation and testing.
  • Working knowledge of Git, build/debug workflows, test automation and disciplined version-controlled development.

Desirable Experience:

  • Digital signal processing, fixed-point arithmetic or communications applications, including software-defined radio.
  • High-speed interfaces and data-movement techniques, such as serial links, Ethernet, PCIe, DMA or memory-mapped buses.
  • Embedded Linux drivers and build environments, or microcontroller firmware for system configuration, monitoring and diagnostics.

Skills:

  • Able to own complex technical problems, explain design decisions and collaborate effectively with hardware, RF and software colleagues.
  • Methodical, quality-focused engineering approach with strong documentation and a willingness to support practical laboratory testing.

Qualifications:

  • Degree in Electronic Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science or equivalent relevant commercial experience.

Please note that the post holder of this role should be able to get UK security clearance up to SC level
