Job description
The Field Systems Engineer independently designs, installs, configures, and maintains the full technology stack at dairy and livestock facilities: switching and routing, fiber and copper cabling, point-to-point and local wireless, Windows servers, workstations, and camera systems., * Design site networks from scratch: addressing, VLANs, routing, DHCP/DNS, wireless coverage, fiber vs radio backhaul, and camera/server placement.
- Install and commission switches, wireless bridges and access points, servers, workstations, NVRs/recorders, and related hardware to company and customer specs.
- Run, terminate, test, and organize copper and fiber. Work with wireless radios for barn-to-barn and remote-building links.
- Build and maintain Windows Server roles needed on site (file, print, AD/workgroup as used, DHCP, storage, remote access) and keep the computers that run parlor and farm software working.
- Troubleshoot across layers: cable and fiber, radios, switching, TCP/IP, servers, cameras, and parlor-connected systems. You isolate the fault instead of escalating the whole problem.
- Work safely with hand tools, ladders, and bucket trucks. Install and service in elevated areas, confined spaces, and livestock environments.
- Drive a company vehicle to customer sites, deal directly with farm owners and managers, and leave the site documented so the next person can support it.
- Participate in on-call as assigned.
Who this is for:
You have built complete environments, not only worked a ticket queue or one slice of a large corporate stack.
You can explain why a site is designed a certain way: when to pull fiber instead of shooting a radio, how VLANs and routing keep cameras off the office LAN, how a server and storage plan supports recording and farm software, and what fails first in rain, heat, or a dirty barn.
Corporate specialists who only own wireless, or only servers, or only cameras, will struggle unless they have also designed and installed full sites themselves.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent; additional technical training is useful but does not replace hands-on build experience.
- Several years building and supporting networks, servers, and computers in the field or in small environments where one person owned the whole stack. Ten-plus years in a narrowly scoped corporate role is not a substitute.
- Proven work with cabling, network hardware, and camera or similar IP systems.
- Working knowledge of TCP/IP, switching, VLANs, and basic routing. You can trace a packet from camera to server without guessing.
- Hands-on experience with fiber and/or licensed or unlicensed wireless radios.
- Broad, practical knowledge of Windows Server roles and Windows workstations as they are used on a real site (not only theory).
- English must be your primary language.
- Able to lift 50 pounds and work indoors and outdoors in heat, cold, and livestock facilities.
- Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
- Please apply only if you have personally designed and commissioned systems, not only supported them.
Preferred:
- Dairy, livestock, or other agricultural / industrial site work.
- Familiarity with parlor, barn, or process equipment that sits on the same network.
- Experience documenting as-built networks (diagrams, addressing, credentials, test results).
Key competencies:
- End-to-end ownership: design through install through repair.
- Strong troubleshooting across physical plant, network, and servers.
- Detail and documentation: the next tech should not have to reverse-engineer your work.
- Independent judgment on site when conditions and customer needs change.
- Clear communication with farmers and with the rest of the team.
- Willingness to learn new radios, camera platforms, and farm software without needing a separate department for each., * High school or equivalent (Required)
Experience:
- Network, server, cabling, wireless, or camera systems: 1 year (Required)
Language:
- English (Required)
