Job description
The Build Engineer will focus on turning designs into physical hardware that is buildable and functional as both prototypes and production. Above all else, it has to work. The build engineer will own the implementation of subsystems such as the rotating assembly, static hardware and auxiliary systems. The Build Engineer will have the unique opportunity to build the first of something, such that hundreds to millions of that thing will work in serial production.
Key responsibilities include design for manufacturability (DFM), design for assembly (DFA), work instructions, inspection planning, and fabrication plans. The build engineer could be a designer who wants to spend more time on the factory floor, or a machinist who wants to find the best way to build a new technology.
You should be an expert in at least 1 of the following:
- CNC machining (and programming) or piece part fabrication (bladed components a plus)
- Mechatronics, the robotics stack, mechanical, electrical, controls
- Heavy Fabrication and assembly, sheet metal, large precision fitments, etc., * Collaborate effectively with other engineers to optimize each component of each turbine subsystem for performance and production.
- Select appropriate manufacturing technology to optimize production.
- Operate shop tools such as mill, lathe, MIG welder, saw, and hand tools.
- Coordinate internal and external resources to build systems on schedule.
- Identify and manage key vendors such as machine shops and panel shops.
- Collaborate with responsible engineers to understand requirements for component and system performance.
- Identify production bottlenecks and propose solutions.
- Advise design engineers on feasibility of designs and opportunities to improve manufacturability.
- Perform and document root cause analysis
- Design and build jigs and tooling as needed
Requirements
- MUST HAVE MADE AND DELIVERED HARDWARE BEFORE. Everyone at Stone has pushed hardware. It’s in our blood.
- Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline.
- Professional experience with CAD, and CAM.
- Strong grasp of subtractive and additive manufacturing.
- Comfortable with both precision machining and fabrication assembly.
- Working knowledge of GD&T and tolerance selection. You can only build what you can measure.
- Enthusiastically accomplish tasks with tight time or budget constraints.
- Ability and desire to build America’s next turbine factory.
Preferred Skills and Experience
- Experience with heavy forging, casting and rotary friction welding.
- Perform quality control inspections using CMM and/or measurement instruments.
- A strong preference for simple solutions and minimal systems.
- Familiarity with PLC and/or microcontroller-based process control.
- Experience troubleshooting electro-mechanical systems.
- Familiarity with precision engineered assemblies.
- An appreciation for an elegant design with minimal part-count and simple features.
- Strong desire to mentor and be mentored.
- A Master’s degree or Ph.D. is not overkill.
Benefits & conditions
- Above market cash compensation
- Equity in a fast-growing company
- Pride and glory in building a LOT of hardware that will power AI, manufacturing, cities, and speed up nuclear adoption
- Best in class health insurance, dental, vision
