Job description

CDM Technology is partnering with an electric vehicle manufacturer in Carlsbad to hire a hands-on engineer for battery management system (BMS) and vehicle control system test and calibration.

You’ll work alongside senior BMS engineers who own the requirements and architecture. You’ll be the one in the lab: running the test benches, automating tests, producing calibration data, and debugging hardware with a scope in hand. You’ll also write code, including fixes to the BMS itself.

No automotive or BMS experience required. We’ll train someone with solid fundamentals and real lab time, whether from medical devices, robotics, industrial automation, aerospace, or consumer electronics.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Run BMS and vehicle control system test benches, including battery emulation, high-voltage fixtures, and CAN tools.
  • Write and run test procedures against the Vehicle requirements.
  • Automate bench tests in Python.
  • Validate calibration data (limit tables, derating curves, protection thresholds) from battery and vehicle testing.
  • Track down hardware and software faults, including intermittent ones, with scopes, logic analyzers, and bus captures.
  • Inform and Fix BMS and vehicle control code in C/C+, with peer review and tests.
  • Help validate high-voltage protection: contactors, precharge, interlocks, isolation monitoring, and pyro disconnect.
  • Bring up new circuit boards.
  • Support vehicle integration, fleet issues, and end-of-line testing.
  • Flag gaps in the requirements to the senior engineers when testing turns them up.
  • Use AI-assisted development tools day to day.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related field.
  • 1-5 years in Embedded software, test, or validation. Strong new grads with relevant internships or projects considered.
  • Agentic coding in C, C+ and Python, well enough to read, debug, and modify Embedded firmware.
  • Test automation or data analysis.
  • Hands-on with lab equipment: power supplies, meters, scopes, logic analyzers.
  • Can read schematics and datasheets, or is eager to learn.
  • Willing to learn high-voltage safety and work around HV battery systems.
  • Onsite in Carlsbad, CA.
  • Able to travel internationally, including to China: up to 2 weeks, 1-2 times a year.

Nice to Have

  • Hands-on high-voltage battery or electrical systems experience.
  • Battery cell or pack testing.
  • CAN and DBC files; SPI, I2C, UART.
  • Bare-metal or RTOS firmware.
  • Hardware-in-the-loop testing or battery emulation.
  • Formal test procedures with requirements traceability.
  • Functional safety exposure.
  • Linux, Git, Jira.
  • Production or end-of-line test.
  • AI coding tools such as Claude Code, Cursor, or GitHub Copilot., Our client uses AI-assisted development across its engineering work. Experience with these tools is a plus; curiosity about them matters more.
