Job description
We’re hiring a hands-on builder to work with Simon’s staff and turn repetitive insurance work into useful tools, with the goal of evolving proven internal workflows. You’ll understand how people handle submissions, quoting, and follow-up, then build and improve the workflows they use.
You’ll collaborate with the management team on priorities and technical delivery, with onsite work alongside Simon’s team in New York City and collaboration in Garden City on occasion. This role suits an early-career engineer who enjoys talking to users, building practical software, and helping people get comfortable using it.
What You’ll Do
- What you will do
- Sit with staff to map a workflow from intake through completion. Identify repeated entry, missing information, exceptions, and handoffs that leave work waiting.
- Build small applications, scripts, and integrations for service and clearing work. Improve existing tools for schedules of values and workers’ compensation calculations.
- Extend proven workflows into renewal follow-up, staff and broker-facing screens, and accounting data flows or reconciliation, in the order agreed with the team.
- Use AI and automation where they help, with validation, clear error handling, and human review. Follow approved data-access practices and keep insurance decisions with licensed staff.
- Train users, write short instructions, and support tools after rollout. Watch where people get stuck and make the next version easier to use.
- Document processes handled by virtual assistants and help reduce avoidable manual steps. Track time saved, errors, open work, and actual usage so the team can judge what is working., Success means staff using the tools in daily work, fewer missed handoffs, and less repetitive processing. You’ll build one workflow at a time, with technical review and feedback from the people doing the work.
Requirements
- Full-stack experience turning practical problems into working tools across web interfaces, backend services, and databases. Work, internships, coursework, and substantial personal projects can demonstrate this.
- Working knowledge of a language such as Python or JavaScript, and comfort connecting systems through APIs or structured data files.
- Ability to work with spreadsheets and structured data, check outputs carefully, and troubleshoot when an automation breaks.
- Curiosity about how people actually work, patience when teaching a tool, and the ability to ask clear questions without assuming the process is already documented.
- Good follow-through: write down decisions, surface blockers, test with users, and stay involved after a tool goes live.
Helpful experience
Experience with AI-native development, including AI-assisted coding and building or testing AI-powered workflows, is useful. Familiarity with workflow platforms, SQL, simple web interfaces, or AI APIs also helps, as does experience with insurance agency operations, document extraction, accounting workflows, or customer support. You don’t need to arrive with expertise in every area.
