Job description
We are seeking a Development Test Engineer to support the development, testing, and optimization of gasoline engine emissions and aftertreatment systems for future automotive propulsion applications, including hybrid and electrified vehicles.
The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience in engine and powertrain testing, emissions calibration, engine hardware, onboard diagnostics (OBD), and simulation/modeling. This role will focus on improving emissions performance, fuel efficiency, and system reliability while meeting current and upcoming global regulatory requirements, including California LEV IV, EURO 7, China 7, and Tier 4, as applicable.
The engineer will work with cross-functional teams across engine development, controls, calibration, regulatory compliance, and suppliers to develop and validate advanced emissions technologies., * Coordinate daily engine, powertrain, dynamometer, and vehicle-based testing activities, working closely with technicians and support engineers.
- Plan, schedule, monitor, and report project activities to ensure timely delivery of engineering objectives.
- Develop and optimize emissions aftertreatment solutions for high-efficiency gasoline and hybrid powertrains.
- Adjust and optimize engine and emissions system calibrations to support new emissions hardware.
- Evaluate competitor vehicles’ emissions systems using instrumentation and onboard diagnostics (OBD).
- Lead and coordinate technology development projects with internal engineering teams and external suppliers.
- Plan and execute tests, analyze results, and troubleshoot complex powertrain system issues related to emissions, diagnostics, performance, fuel economy, NVH, and quality.
- Support the integration of advanced catalysts, gasoline particulate filters (GPFs), exhaust sensors, and other emissions control technologies.
- Communicate system and component-level functional requirements to powertrain engineering teams and management.
- Use simulation and modeling tools to support engineering decisions and reduce physical testing requirements.
- Analyze technical data, document findings, and present recommendations to engineering teams and senior management.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Automotive, Chemical, Mechanical, or Electrical/Computer Engineering from an ABET-accredited university.
- Minimum 2 years of engineering experience in hardware development, controls, calibration, or powertrain systems.
- Experience with port fuel injection (PFI) and gasoline direct injection (GDI) spark-ignition engines, including internal combustion and hybrid applications.
- Knowledge of powertrain systems, emissions aftertreatment, onboard diagnostics (OBD), and engine calibration.
- Experience running and analyzing global emissions test cycles in engine test cells or vehicle testing environments.
- Familiarity with powertrain data acquisition and calibration tools, such as INCA, CAS, AVL Concerto, TCKs, or INTECRIO.
- Experience with simulation/modeling tools such as GT-Power, AVL BOOST, AxiSuite, or equivalent.
- Working knowledge of combustion processes, engine hardware, thermal systems, transmissions, OBD, and electrified propulsion systems.
- Understanding of trade-offs between emissions, fuel economy, cost, drivability, diagnostics, and noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH).
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, root-cause analysis, and problem-solving skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel and project planning/reporting tools.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present technical findings clearly.
Preferred Skills
- Experience with automotive emissions regulations and global compliance requirements.
- Knowledge of catalysts, gasoline particulate filters, exhaust sensors, and emissions control strategies.
- Experience with engine or powertrain dynamometers and vehicle chassis dynamometer testing.
- Strong project coordination, leadership, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
