Job description

CP2S is seeking an experienced GIS Analyst / Cartographer to support a Federal energy-resources science program at the Denver Federal Center that conducts Congressionally mandated assessments of undiscovered oil and gas resources in priority geologic provinces of the United States and the world. The program completes about 30 province assessments and 30 publications each year.

You will be the program’s go-to specialist for GIS and scientific graphics: compiling and analyzing oil and gas data, building and finalizing assessment-unit boundaries, calculating geographic allocations, and producing publication-quality maps, figures and posters for USGS-style Fact Sheets, Data Releases, reports, briefings and Congressional requests. You will work directly with the Project Chief and project geologists in weekly face-to-face sessions. Minimal travel is anticipated. Occasional local or national travel to scientific meetings may be requested. On-site work with in-person weekly meetings with the Federal Project Chief; telework arrangements to be confirmed at award., GIS Support:

  • Access, query, collate and display surface and subsurface oil and gas data from proprietary databases (S&P Global, Nehring, GeoMark and others).
  • Scan, georeference and digitize maps and data layers: geology, structure, isopach and structure-contour maps, cross sections, thermal maturation, bathymetry, land use, province and basin boundaries, and total petroleum system (TPS) and assessment unit (AU) boundaries.
  • Finalize map boundaries after Geology Review Meetings to reflect documented decisions.
  • Allocate oil and gas data to each AU and calculate allocations to countries, states, provinces, land classifications (Federal, private, state, tribal, other), all classes of Federal lands, and ecosystems. Calculations must be accurate, traceable and reproducible.
  • Store, organize and archive project files on Government servers and cloud-based storage according to program procedures.
  • Prepare maps and metadata for Fact Sheets, Data Releases, briefings, presentations and other publications, and hand off complete GIS files for graphics production.

Graphics Support:

  • Prepare graphics of all types for presentations and web, online and print publications: maps, redrafted scanned images, measured sections, well logs and seismic data.
  • Design large-format paper and online posters for in-house, regional, national and international scientific meetings.
  • Produce resource-summary bubble maps, tables and graphics for online presentation and Congressional requests.
  • Manage multiple concurrent assignments against tight deadlines and meet quality standards (95% of deliverables accepted without substantial revision; zero tolerance for scientific inaccuracies).

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in geographic information science, geography, geology or geoscience, cartography, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and professional experience.
  • At least 5 years of professional GIS experience using Esri ArcGIS Pro (and/or ArcMap), including geoprocessing, spatial overlay, attribute management and area/allocation calculations.
  • Demonstrated experience working with geologic, petroleum, energy or other earth-science data (for example well data, structure and isopach maps, cross sections or basin boundaries).
  • Experience scanning, georeferencing and digitizing source maps with accurate spatial alignment and attribution.
  • Publication-quality cartography and scientific graphics using Adobe Illustrator (plus Photoshop and/or InDesign) and Microsoft PowerPoint, including large-format posters.
  • Experience preparing geospatial metadata and data packages for formal data releases or publications.
  • Proven ability to manage several concurrent projects, prioritize changing and urgent requests, and deliver accurate, on-time work.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, and comfort working directly with senior scientists.
  • Ability to work on-site in Lakewood, CO, and attend weekly in-person meetings.
  • US citizenship. Authorized to work in the United States.
  • Ability to pass a Federal background investigation, obtain a Government credential, sign a non-disclosure agreement, and complete annual Federal IT security awareness training.., * Hands-on experience with S&P Global (formerly IHS) well and production data, Nehring, or GeoMark databases.
  • Familiarity with USGS petroleum assessment concepts: total petroleum systems, assessment units, and conventional versus continuous (unconventional) accumulations.
  • Experience with USGS or other Federal scientific publication standards (Fact Sheets, Data Releases, Scientific Investigations Maps) and FGDC/ISO metadata.
  • Experience with land-status and land-classification datasets (Federal, tribal, state and private lands) and ecosystem or ecoregion datasets.
  • Graphics work with well logs, seismic sections, measured sections or stratigraphic columns.
  • Python/ArcPy or ModelBuilder automation of repetitive GIS workflows.
  • Cloud storage, data management and archiving practices.
  • Experience making maps and graphics accessible (Section 508).
