Job description

We’re a team of healthcare IT experts solving real-world interoperability problems, and we’re looking for a driven, curious engineer who wants to help modernize how health data moves. As our Integration Engineer for FHIR & Cloud-Native Architecture, you’ll design, build, and maintain the pipelines that power secure, scalable data exchange across our ecosystem - combining AWS-native services, Google Cloud Healthcare API, BigQuery, and Mirth Connect. You’ll be a driving force behind our FHIR-first strategy, working hands-on with FHIR APIs, transaction bundles, and SMART on FHIR applications while ensuring everything we build meets industry standards and regulatory requirements.

What You’ll Do

FHIR Interoperability & API Development

  • Design, build, and deploy FHIR API endpoints; process FHIR bundles and support SMART on FHIR integrations
  • Ensure full compliance with HL7 FHIR standards and current interoperability mandates

Cloud-Native Data Pipelines

  • Architect and maintain serverless, event-driven pipelines using AWS services (Lambda, SQS, API Gateway, Glue, AWS HealthLake) and GCP infrastructure (Google Cloud Healthcare FHIR API, BigQuery)

Core Integration & Maintenance

  • Apply deep Mirth Connect and traditional HIE expertise alongside modern cloud services to troubleshoot complex integrations, optimize performance, and safeguard data integrity

Backend Development & Scripting

  • Write clean, reliable backend code and data transformations in Node.js, JavaScript, and Java across Mirth Connect channels and serverless functions

Data Storage & Management

  • Design and maintain relational data structures in PostgreSQL; optimize analytical query performance in BigQuery

Incident Response

  • Respond to service degradations, outages, and API latency issues; triage and resolve root causes across hybrid on-prem/cloud environments

Testing & Validation

  • Rigorously test and validate FHIR profiles, API payloads, and data exchange workflows for accuracy, reliability, and security

Documentation & Collaboration

  • Document API endpoints, data mappings, and cloud architecture in JIRA, Confluence, and SharePoint; partner closely with cross-functional teams, project managers, and clinical stakeholders

Compliance & Security

  • Uphold HIPAA and healthcare cybersecurity standards, including encryption, identity management, and OAuth2/SMART-on-FHIR authorization frameworks

Requirements

  • 3+ years of experience as a Data or Integration Engineer, with hands-on work building healthcare interoperability solutions using HL7 FHIR in cloud environments
  • Strong proficiency with FHIR APIs, resources, transaction bundles, and SMART on FHIR application frameworks
  • Hands-on experience with AWS (Lambda, SQS, API Gateway, Glue, AWS Health) and/or GCP (Google Cloud Healthcare FHIR API, BigQuery)
  • Proficiency in Node.js, JavaScript, and Java for backend development, serverless functions, and Mirth Connect customization
  • Experience with PostgreSQL and writing/optimizing complex SQL queries
  • Solid grounding in HL7 v2/v3, IHE profiles, and Mirth Connect interface development alongside modern RESTful API design
  • A track record of resolving integration bottlenecks, data format discrepancies, protocol mismatches, and auth/latency challenges
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills - you can explain technical concepts clearly to both engineers and clinical stakeholders

Nice to Have

  • Experience with Power BI or similar BI tools for reporting
  • Familiarity with Agile frameworks and tools like JIRA, Confluence, and SharePoint
  • Comfort working independently in a fast-paced, performance-driven environment
  • Strong analytical and interpersonal skills, with a collaborative team mindset, * Successful completion of background check and reference verification
