Job description

In this role, you will be an experienced engineer helping to improve and expand our platform and product. You will accomplish this by maintaining and adding new features, investigating/resolving bugs, creating helpful documentation, and re-architecting our system to achieve better scalability and availability.

As part of the Growth and Merchant Self-Service team, you will be responsible for building applications that define the user experience on the Clover Dashboard. Partnering with Infrastructure, Product, and Design teams, you will be pragmatic in balancing priorities and enjoy working in an iterative model where specifications are constantly evolving. You will own your services from development through deployment, mentor junior talent, and help drive the technical roadmap for products that support over 700k merchants worldwide.

What you will do:

  • Architect, develop, and maintain responsive web applications using React, TypeScript, and modern CSS/HTML.
  • Design, build, and maintain containerized microservices and high-throughput REST APIs using Java and Spring Boot.
  • Design asynchronous workflows and distributed messaging pipelines using pub/sub messaging systems (Google pub/sub, Kafka etc.) to handle real-time data synchronization, merchant event delivery, and decoupled background processing.
  • Evaluate and recommend modern frameworks, technologies, and tools, and execute processes.
  • Identify technical requirements in product meetings and assist the business team with realistic project planning and feature development; translate product requirements into functional, maintainable, extensible software that is in-line with company objectives
  • Take end-to-end ownership of services through testing, CI/CD deployment, production monitoring, distributed tracing, and regular on-call rotation.
  • Partner with Infrastructure teams to design relational schemas (MySQL), optimize data pipelines, and re-architect existing systems for high availability, fault tolerance, and low latency.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional, distributed agile teams with the flexibility to work across time zones.
  • Conduct code and architecture reviews, champion distributed system best practices, and mentor engineers across the team.
  • Coach and mentor engineers to deliver efficient, extensible solutions and improve their technical and leadership skills.
  • Advocate engineering best practices with active engagement leveraging agile methods and a CI/CD DevOps mindset.
  • Triage bugs and the impact on product or service operations and quality with a focus on customer centricity
  • Prioritize and multi-task between projects with the ability to handle changing priorities.
  • Excellent team player with strong empathy and critical thinking skills.

Requirements

  • Degree in Computer Science or Engineering field or related experience
  • 5+ years of professional software engineering experience building full-stack web applications.
  • Strong backend engineering background with Java and the Spring Boot ecosystem.
  • Proven frontend expertise using React, TypeScript, and modern state management.
  • Solid experience with relational databases, data modeling, and query optimization (MySQL preferred).
  • Hands-on experience owning services in production, including CI/CD pipelines, containerized environments, and cloud monitoring tools.

What would be great to have:

  • Experience designing event streams, schema management, and message ordering/deduplication patterns at scale.
  • Familiarity with Kotlin and Python
  • Previous experience in the payments or fintech industry
  • Background in re-architecting systems for high availability and scalability
