The engineer will implement routing, switching, firewall, virtual local area network, wireless, and network-management solutions; monitor performance and availability; troubleshoot complex connectivity issues; and maintain accurate technical documentation. Success requires independent technical judgment, disciplined configuration management, and close coordination with cybersecurity, systems engineering, operations, and program stakeholders.

Role Priorities

  • Deliver secure, resilient, and high-performing network services for mission and business operations.

  • Maintain standardized configurations, accurate documentation, and strong change control across network environments.

  • Identify and resolve performance, availability, interoperability, and security issues before they affect users or mission outcomes.

  • Support modernization while maintaining compliance with approved Department of Defense cybersecurity and engineering requirements.

  • Provide stakeholders with timely technical analysis, clear recommendations, and reliable status information.

Key Responsibilities

Network Engineering and Implementation

  • Design, configure, test, and deploy network solutions using routers, switches, firewalls, virtual local area networks, wireless technologies, and associated services.

  • Configure and manage dynamic routing protocols, switching features, access controls, network address translation, and segmentation for tactical and enterprise environments.

  • Evaluate technical requirements, network dependencies, capacity constraints, and implementation risks; recommend practical solutions aligned with approved architectures.

Operations, Security, and Troubleshooting

  • Monitor network health, availability, utilization, and performance; investigate incidents and restore service within established priorities.

  • Troubleshoot complex Layer 2 and Layer 3 connectivity, routing, switching, firewall, wireless, and interoperability issues using approved diagnostic tools.

  • Implement network hardening, security controls, and remediation actions in accordance with approved Security Technical Implementation Guides and organizational policy.

  • Support cryptographic devices and protocols used in defense network environments, coordinating with security specialists when escalation is required.

Configuration Management and Collaboration

  • Maintain network diagrams, configuration baselines, addressing plans, interface records, standard operating procedures, and implementation documentation.

  • Use network monitoring and configuration-management tools to identify drift, support backups, control changes, and improve operational visibility.

  • Participate in technical reviews, change-control boards, testing events, and implementation activities; document decisions, risks, and follow-up actions.

  • Coordinate with cybersecurity, systems engineering, operations, vendors, and customer stakeholders to integrate solutions and resolve cross-functional impediments.
