Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma and either:

(a) Graduation from a regionally-accredited or New York State-registered college or university with an Associate Degree in Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, Computer Repair Technology, or a closely-related field; or

(b) Two years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience in computer operation or as a help desk support technician; or

(c) An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (a) and (b) above.

distinguishing features of the class:The work involves responsibility for receiving calls to a Department’s Help Desk and personally resolving or arranging for resolution of the problems presented. The incumbent maintains documentation of activities and performs a variety of both general clerical and routine computer-related technical tasks. Work is carried out in accordance with sound, modern, up-to-date methods, techniques, and procedures as approved by the department head or his/her designee. The incumbent covers the Help Desk, logs in all incoming calls, personally resolves computer-related problems or refers them to more appropriate technical staff member(s) for resolution, monitors computer output and printing procedures, files, performs computer maintenance, and installs software as required. Work is performed under the direct supervision of a Help Desk Supervisor or the department head or his/her designee, with some leeway allowed to the incumbent for the exercise of independent judgment in planning assignment details as long as standard operating procedures and scheduled completion timeframes are followed. When assigned to work on a particular project, additional guidelines may also be set by the head of the department in which the specific project is undertaken. Direct supervision of the work of subordinates is usually not a feature of this class of positions. Does related work as required.
