Job description
This is a hands-on transportation leadership role responsible for managing CDL drivers, daily routing and dispatch execution, service performance, safety, accountability, and customer needs across both our Raleigh and Virginia operations.
This position is based in Raleigh, but the Operations Manager will also have direct responsibility for supporting and managing our Virginia driver team. Travel to Virginia approximately once per week is a regular requirement of the position.
Our routes are not simply fixed routes that run the same way every day. Customer needs change, new service requests are added, drivers call out, trucks break down, service times vary, and urgent situations arise.
A driver calls out. A truck breaks down. A customer needs emergency service. A route suddenly needs to change. Your job is to make the call, adjust the plan, communicate clearly, and keep the operation moving.
This is not a highly predictable operation. Success in this role requires someone who enjoys solving an evolving operational puzzle, can handle pressure without becoming rigid, and can change direction quickly while maintaining accuracy and accountability.
What You’ll Do
You will manage and support CDL drivers across both our Raleigh and Virginia operations while overseeing daily route planning, dispatch, service execution, safety, accountability, and customer needs.
Responsibilities include personally coaching drivers, setting expectations, addressing performance issues, conducting corrective action when necessary, and creating a culture of accountability.
You will plan, build, adjust, and optimize routes based on customer service requirements, geography, driver availability, truck capacity, service windows, hours of service, equipment availability, and changing priorities throughout the day.
You will maintain regular communication with the Virginia driver team, monitor their routes and performance, address service or operational issues, provide coaching and accountability, and ensure Virginia operations are following the same safety, service, and performance expectations as Raleigh.
This role will require travel to Virginia approximately once per week to provide in-person leadership, work directly with drivers, address performance or service issues, observe operations firsthand, and maintain strong communication between Raleigh leadership and the Virginia team.
You will also monitor route progress and driver performance, respond to customer emergencies and service issues, coordinate with maintenance when equipment problems affect the schedule, ensure DOT and safety requirements are followed, track operational performance, and communicate clearly with drivers, customers, and leadership.
Requirements
REQUIRED: Minimum of 3 years of experience personally building custom routes daily. Experience limited to managing primarily fixed or static routes does not meet this requirement., This position requires someone who is highly adaptable without sacrificing structure or attention to detail.
Priorities can change throughout the day. Driver call-outs, truck or equipment issues, customer emergencies, route changes, weather, service delays, and unexpected operational needs are a normal part of the job.
The right person can remain calm when the original plan changes, quickly reassess the situation, make a thoughtful decision, and move forward without becoming frustrated or overwhelmed.
You should be comfortable:
- Following established processes, procedures, safety requirements, and company standards while still using good judgment when circumstances change.
- Reprioritizing work quickly when multiple operational issues happen at once.
- Managing several moving pieces without losing important details.
- Making decisions with incomplete or changing information.
- Communicating route and operational changes clearly to drivers, customers, and leadership.
- Holding employees accountable even during difficult or uncomfortable conversations.
- Managing employees across multiple locations both remotely and in person.
- Working effectively when the plan at 8:00 AM may look very different by 2:00 PM.
- Balancing process and structure with flexibility and real-time problem solving.
- Operating in a high-accountability environment without requiring a predictable or repetitive daily routine.
Who You Are
You are a hands-on leader who understands transportation operations and knows how to earn the respect of drivers while still holding them accountable.
You are comfortable making decisions, addressing difficult performance issues, and having direct conversations when expectations are not being met. You do not avoid confrontation when safety, performance, attendance, or customer service requires action.
You pay attention to details and understand that established processes exist for a reason, but you are not so rigid that you struggle when circumstances require the plan to change.
You are also comfortable leading a team across multiple locations and understand the importance of being physically present with drivers when needed, not just managing from behind a desk., * 3-5+ years of transportation, logistics, dispatch, field service, fleet, or route-based operations experience.
