Job description

The Director of Technology & Data Engineering owns Momentous’ enterprise technology, IT operations, data infrastructure, and systems strategy, building the scalable, secure, and reliable foundation needed to support continued growth and AI-driven innovation.

Reporting to the CFO, this role serves as the company’s technology leader, overseeing company-wide IT, cloud data infrastructure, enterprise systems, data integrations, governance, and emerging AI capabilities. A key focus is creating a unified, trusted data ecosystem that connects Momentous’ eCommerce, subscription, Amazon, retail, financial, and operational platforms while enabling accurate, consistent information across the business. This role partners closely with the Data Analytics Center of Excellence in Finance: Analytics defines the metrics, and Technology builds and runs the platform that delivers them to people and AI tools.

This is a highly hands-on, cross-functional player-coach role that combines deep technical expertise with strategic leadership. The ideal candidate is an entrepreneurial builder who has personally designed and operated modern data platforms, can make pragmatic technology investment decisions, and thrives as a senior technical leader in a lean, high-growth environment., * Own the architecture, development, and operation of Momentous’ cloud data platform, preferably leveraging Google Cloud Platform (GCP) and BigQuery.

  • Design, build, and maintain scalable data ingestion, transformation, and integration pipelines across business systems.
  • Establish development and production environments, access controls, monitoring, and engineering standards.
  • Ensure data reliability, freshness, and cost efficiency through proactive monitoring, optimization, and hands-on problem-solving., * Own integrations across core platforms, including Shopify, Recharge, Fulfil ERP, Amazon, retail systems, and syndicated data sources.
  • Ensure accurate, timely data flows across eCommerce, subscriptions, Finance, Operations, and omnichannel systems.
  • Manage external technology and data vendors, establishing clear service-level expectations and performance accountability.
  • Identify opportunities to simplify systems, automate processes, and improve operational efficiency., * Build and maintain a governed data foundation and semantic layer using dbt, MetricFlow, or equivalent technologies.
  • Implement and enforce metric definitions set by Finance and the Data Analytics Center of Excellence across revenue, channel, product, customer, and subscription data, with automated tests so numbers can’t drift.
  • Partner with Finance and the Data Analytics Manager to ensure data integrity, financial reconciliation, and reliable reporting.

AI Infrastructure & Enablement

  • Develop scalable, AI-ready architecture that enables secure automation, agent workflows, and data-driven applications.
  • Design and implement integrations between enterprise data and AI tools, including MCP servers and related technologies, with appropriate access controls and audit trails.
  • Partner with business leaders to identify and implement high-impact AI use cases that improve efficiency and business capabilities.
  • Set the governance model for AI tools: which systems and data agents can access, how usage is logged, and how outputs are reviewed.

IT Security, Privacy & Risk Management

  • Own enterprise technology security, data privacy, and IT risk management across systems and infrastructure.
  • Establish security standards for customer PII, sensitive business data, identity and access management (IAM), and least-privilege access.
  • Manage vendor security risk and implement SOC-style controls and documentation that keep the company audit-ready as it scales.
  • Maintain business continuity, system recovery, and risk mitigation practices across critical platforms.

Technology Strategy & Leadership

  • Own the company-wide technology strategy and roadmap, balancing speed, cost, security, and long-term business objectives.
  • Oversee employee technology, device management, SaaS administration, and IT support, primarily through an external IT partner.
  • Evaluate technology investments and make pragmatic build-versus-buy decisions.
  • Serve as a hands-on technology partner to Finance, Analytics, eCommerce, Marketing, Operations, and People, translating business needs into scalable solutions.
  • Lead as a player-coach, combining direct technical execution with leadership of external partners and a team that grows over time.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of experience in data engineering, cloud infrastructure, enterprise technology, or related technical disciplines, including meaningful hands-on engineering experience.
  • Demonstrated experience designing, building, and operating modern cloud data platforms, preferably within GCP and BigQuery.
  • Experience owning enterprise IT systems and managing external technology vendors, implementation partners, and SLAs.
  • Experience integrating business systems and data sources, ideally across eCommerce, subscriptions, ERP, Amazon, and omnichannel commerce.
  • Experience operating in lean, high-growth environments where strategic leadership and hands-on technical execution are equally important., * Deep technical expertise in cloud architecture and data engineering; fluent in SQL and Python, with experience in pipeline orchestration and infrastructure-as-code.
  • Strong working knowledge of GCP, BigQuery, data pipelines, identity and access management, environment separation, and cloud cost optimization.
  • Experience with data transformation and semantic layer technologies such as dbt, MetricFlow, or equivalent solutions.
  • Understanding of Shopify, Recharge, ERP platforms such as Fulfil, and omnichannel commerce integrations.
  • Hands-on experience building with LLMs and AI-native architecture, including MCP servers, AI agents, secure data access, and workflow automation.
  • Knowledge of enterprise IT administration, SaaS management, information security, customer privacy, vendor risk, and SOC-style control frameworks.
  • Excellent communication, prioritization, and cross-functional leadership skills., * Hands-on builder and pragmatic leader who is equally comfortable writing code, solving technical problems, and setting long-term strategy.
  • Balances technical sophistication with business judgment, cost discipline, and practical execution.
  • Comfortable serving as a senior technical leader in a lean organization without extensive resources or established processes.
  • Intellectually curious and passionate about emerging technologies, AI, automation, and continuous improvement.
