Design Engineer

Were looking for an engineer who is obsessed with AI and keeps finding things to build with it. You try new tools, follow an idea far enough to make it work, and have projects youre excited to show us.

Youll build across Rillets product, internal tools, and experimental work. That could mean making a daily workflow faster, building a tool that removes repetitive work, or prototyping a new way for people to interact with AI. Youll help spot useful opportunities and take them from an initial idea to something people can use.

Rillet gives you real accounting problems to solve alongside engineers, designers, and accounting experts. Youll see where new capabilities help and where they fall short. Financial software needs to earn peoples trust: answers need evidence, actions need clear consequences, and mistakes need to be caught. Theres room to experiment and a reason to care deeply about getting the details right.

What Youll Do

• Build product features, internal tools, and prototypes that apply AI to practical problems. Work could include finding relevant financial records, automating a repetitive task, or helping someone review an agents proposed actions.
• Get close to the people using what you build. Understand the task, identify friction, and test whether your idea makes their work easier.
• Try new models, tools, and ways of building. Bring back working examples and a clear view of where they could be useful at Rillet.
• Make AI features clear and usable. Design interactions that help people understand an answer, inspect its sources, and stay in control of what happens next.
• Work with experienced engineers and accounting experts to test behavior, catch failures, and turn promising work into reliable software. Follow through after release and improve it based on use and feedback.

• You have taste and can explain your choices. You notice what makes an interface feel clear, considered, and satisfying, and bring that care to what you build. You dont need a formal design background.
• Youre already building with AI. Show us an app, agent, automation, or experiment you made, why you built it, and what surprised you. You have opinions about the tools you use because youve pushed them.
• You have solid coding fundamentals. You can get a working application off the ground, connect it to an API, and investigate why something broke. You use AI to move faster and can explain, test, and improve the code it produces.
• You notice what makes a product good. You can point to an interaction you made clearer or easier to use and explain the choices behind it. You dont need a formal design background.
• You take initiative and keep learning. You can tell us about something you wanted to build before you knew how, how you figured it out, and when you sought help.
• You respond well to feedback. You share work while its still rough, ask good questions, and can show how someone elses perspective improved the result.

The expected base salary range for this role is $170,000-$240,000 in New York City and San Francisco. Final compensation within this range will depend on factors including skills, experience, qualifications, and the scope of the role. This role is also eligible for equity and benefits.
