Job description
The program scope includes junior-level Java and software development, application maintenance, defect resolution, unit testing, documentation, Agile team support, API and database integration support, CI/CD participation, basic cloud and DevSecOps enablement, troubleshooting, and coordination with developers, testers, product owners, and customer stakeholders., The Junior Developer supports USPS application development, maintenance, testing, and modernization activities by building, updating, troubleshooting, and documenting software solutions under the guidance of senior developers and technical leads. The role contributes to Java application development, Agile delivery, secure coding practices, defect resolution, automation, and user-focused application improvements while developing the technical skills needed to support reliable, maintainable, and mission-aligned systems., Software Development and Maintenance
- Develop, modify, test, and maintain application code under the direction of senior developers, technical leads, and project leadership.
- Support Java application development activities, including object-oriented programming, API integration, debugging, unit testing, and maintenance of Java-based components as assigned.
- Support front-end, back-end, API, database, and integration tasks based on program priorities and assigned backlog items.
- Assist with implementing bug fixes, minor enhancements, configuration updates, and user-requested improvements.
- Write clean, maintainable code that follows team standards, code review expectations, and approved development practices., * Investigate application defects, error reports, performance issues, and user-reported problems with appropriate guidance.
- Review logs, reproduce issues, document findings, and support root-cause analysis for routine application or integration problems.
- Assist with validating fixes across development, test, staging, and production-support workflows as applicable.
- Coordinate with developers, testers, product owners, and support teams to resolve assigned issues in a timely manner.
Secure Coding, Testing, and Quality
- Apply secure coding practices and participate in peer reviews to reduce defects and improve application reliability.
- Create and maintain unit tests, including Java unit tests when applicable, test scripts, and supporting documentation to validate assigned development work.
- Support code quality activities, static analysis, vulnerability remediation, and defect tracking as directed by the team.
- Follow data protection, access control, and privacy expectations appropriate to USPS systems and Public Trust requirements.
Agile Delivery and DevSecOps Support
- Participate in Agile ceremonies, including daily stand-ups, sprint planning, backlog refinement, reviews, and retrospectives.
- Update assigned tasks in Jira, Azure DevOps, or similar tools with accurate status, blockers, and completion notes.
- Support CI/CD activities by assisting with builds, deployments, pipeline troubleshooting, and environment validation.
- Contribute to repeatable delivery practices through documentation, automation support, and disciplined configuration management.
Documentation and Stakeholder Support
- Prepare and update technical notes, user guidance, release notes, configuration details, and support documentation.
- Communicate progress, risks, blockers, and questions clearly to team members, project managers, and technical leads.
- Support knowledge sharing, onboarding materials, and continuity documentation for applications and development processes.
- Demonstrate professionalism, responsiveness, and a willingness to learn in support of customer and team needs.
Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, Information Systems, Cybersecurity, Management Information Systems, or a related technical field preferred. Equivalent professional experience, internship experience, military technical training, coding bootcamp completion, or relevant coursework may be considered.
Professional Certifications
- Security+ preferred if required for access or privileged support responsibilities.
- AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, Microsoft, Java, Oracle Java, Python, JavaScript, Scrum, or related developer certification preferred.
- Agile, DevSecOps, software testing, or secure coding training preferred., * 0-3 years of software development, application support, systems analysis, internship, academic project, or related technical experience.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance/suitability determination as required by the USPS program.
- Java development experience, including object-oriented programming, debugging, unit testing, and support for Java-based application components.
- Experience with one or more additional programming or scripting languages such as JavaScript, TypeScript, Python, C#, or similar.
- Understanding of web application development, APIs, databases, version control, testing, and software development lifecycle practices.
- Experience using Git, GitHub, GitLab, Azure DevOps, Bitbucket, or similar source control and collaboration tools.
- Ability to troubleshoot routine application issues, document findings, and work with senior developers to implement fixes.
- Ability to participate in Agile delivery, update assigned work items, communicate blockers, and support sprint commitments.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, attention to detail, willingness to learn, and ability to work effectively in a remote team environment., * Experience supporting USPS, federal government, public sector, logistics, mail, financial, or high-volume transaction environments.
- Exposure to Java/Spring Boot, Java APIs, REST services, object-oriented design, .NET/C#, React, Angular, Node.js, Python, REST APIs, SQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle, SQL Server, or similar technologies.
- Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, cloud services, containers, automated testing, code scanning, and DevSecOps practices.
- Experience with Jira, Confluence, Azure DevOps, ServiceNow, SharePoint, or similar project and documentation tools.
- Exposure to accessibility, privacy, cybersecurity, data protection, or secure development practices.
- Ability to learn new tools quickly and support multiple application teams, business users, and technical stakeholders.
