Job description

Citi is seeking a highly motivated Applications Development Senior Programmer Analyst to join the Collateral Management Engines Technology team within Markets Technology.

In this role, you will be instrumental in designing, building, and enhancing high-throughput, enterprise-grade Arranging Engines and Rehypothecation Engines that serve tier-one institutional hedge fund clients.

  • The Arranging Engine is a mission-critical platform enabling financing structures that provide enhanced leverage and margin optimization to institutional clients beyond standard Regulation T (Reg T) and Portfolio Margin constraints.

  • The Rehypothecation Engine is an enterprise-critical system that calculates and manages eligible client collateral available for reuse-supporting firm financing, client debit balance funding, securities lending, and centralized market operations in compliance with global regulatory frameworks (such as SEC Rule 15c3-3 and CASS/SFTR).

You will collaborate closely with product managers, quantitative analysts, business analysts, and engineering leads to deliver scalable, resilient, low-latency, and cloud-ready solutions leveraging Java, Spring Boot, and enterprise SQL databases.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Architecture, Design & Engineering
  • Design, build, test, deploy, and maintain robust applications leveraging Java microservices.

  • Architect modular, extensible, and high-performance backend services capable of processing complex, high-volume financial calculations in real time and batch modes.

  • Author clean, well-documented, testable, and maintainable code adhering to Citi’s engineering standards, enterprise architecture principles, and secure coding practices.

  1. Database Engineering & Performance Optimization
  • Design high-performance relational database schemas, stored procedures, indexing strategies, and views for high-volume financial data processing.

  • Profile and optimize backend queries, caching layers, and API response times to ensure low-latency data retrieval and reliable processing of massive datasets.

  • Guarantee data integrity, strict transactional consistency (ACID compliance), and comprehensive audit trails across all collateral and financing workflows.

  1. End-to-End Ownership & Agile Delivery
  • Assume end-to-end ownership of software deliverables across the full Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC)-from technical design and implementation to automated testing, deployment, and post-release support.

  • Drive iterative delivery using Agile/Scrum methodologies, actively contributing to sprint planning, backlog refinement, architectural reviews, and sprint demonstrations.

  • Champion Test-Driven Development (TDD) and automated testing across unit, integration, and contract testing suites using frameworks such as JUnit, Mockito.

  1. DevOps, CI/CD & Platform Modernization
  • Integrate automated builds, static code analysis (SonarQube), security vulnerability scanning, and automated deployment pipelines into enterprise CI/CD workflows (GitHub, TeamCity/Jenkins, Harness/uDeploy).

  • Participate actively in platform modernization initiatives, including microservice containerization (Docker, Red Hat OpenShift / Kubernetes) and cloud-ready architectures.

  1. Production Support & Operational Excellence
  • Partner with Level 3 Application Support and DevOps teams to triage and resolve production incidents, conduct Root Cause Analyses (RCAs), and implement permanent preventive remediations.

  • Integrate observability, telemetry, health metrics, and structured logging (Prometheus, Grafana, Splunk / ELK) to ensure high availability, resilience, and operational transparency.

Requirements

Required Technical Qualifications

  • Experience: 5-8 years of professional, hands-on software development experience architecting and building enterprise-scale distributed systems.

  • Java Expertise: In-depth mastery of Core Java (Java 17+), Concurrency & Multithreading, JVM Internals & Memory Tuning, Data Structures & Algorithms, I/O & Network Programming, Spring Framework, Spring Boot, and RESTful API architecture.

  • Database & SQL: Extensive experience with relational database management systems (Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, or PostgreSQL), including schema design, query optimization, indexing strategies, and transaction isolation management.

  • Microservices & Event-Driven Architecture: Practical experience implementing microservices architectures, REST/JSON APIs, and distributed messaging/event streaming platforms (e.g., Apache Kafka, TIBCO EMS, or Solace).

  • Testing & Quality Engineering: Solid foundation in unit and integration testing frameworks (JUnit, Mockito).

  • Build & DevOps Tooling: Hands-on experience with Git/GitHub, Maven/Gradle, CI/CD pipelines (TeamCity/Jenkins/Harness), and containerization (Docker).

Preferred / Nice-to-Have Qualifications

  • Domain Knowledge: Prior experience in Prime Brokerage, Collateral Management, Securities Lending, Margin Lending (Reg T / Portfolio Margin).

  • Cloud & Container Orchestration: Hands-on familiarity with Red Hat OpenShift, Kubernetes, or public cloud platforms.

  • Data & Batch Frameworks: Experience with ORM frameworks (Hibernate/JPA), distributed caching (Redis/Hazelcast), or high-throughput batch processing (Spring Batch).

Professional & Behavioral Competencies

  • Ownership & Accountability: Proactive mindset with demonstrated capability to lead feature streams independently from design to production rollout.

  • Problem Solving under Pressure: Proven ability to manage competing priorities, meet critical delivery milestones, and adapt to evolving business requirements.

  • Communication & Stakeholder Management: Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to articulate complex technical and financial concepts to both engineering peers and business stakeholders.

  • Agile Collaboration: Track record of collaborating effectively within geographically distributed, cross-functional Agile squads., * Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, or a related quantitative discipline (or equivalent practical experience).
