Job description

Do you have a deep knowledge of Linux combined with OpenSSL?

You could be progressing your career at a successful and expanding software house that provide cyber security products to a range of finance, government, defence, law enforcement and pharmaceutical companies.

As a Linux Systems Developer you’ll join a core Linux team in a newly created role, taking ownership of developing and maintaining secure, reliable software at operating system level. You’ll work across Linux security mechanisms, kernel-level hardening and cryptographic technologies, applying security-by-design principles throughout the development lifecycle.

This is a specialist engineering role suited to someone who enjoys working close to the operating system and tackling complex security challenges. You’ll use C as your primary language, with Bash for scripting, developing robust, maintainable software and contributing to technical design and code reviews. A key focus will be assessing and strengthening the security of the Linux platform, including in-depth work with OpenSSL, X.509 certificates and PKI, as the organisation works towards Common Criteria certification.

Requirements

  • You have strong programming experience in C, including debugging, memory management and system-level programming
  • You’re highly proficient with Bash scripting for automation, tooling, testing and integration
  • You have a deep understanding of Linux operating systems, especially Debian based ones, system services, process management, permissions and system administration
  • You have a good knowledge of OpenSSL (both on the command line and programmatically), X.509 certificates and PKI fundamentals
  • You understand Linux security mechanisms including seccomp, udev and auditd
  • You have a good knowledge of Linux privilege management, capabilities, access controls and application isolation
  • You have a strong understanding of secure software development practices, threat mitigation and common security vulnerabilities
  • You’re keen to take ownership, work independently, solve complex technical problems and communicate technical concepts clearly

Benefits & conditions

  • Salary to £85k + OTE
  • 25 days holiday, rising to 27 in two years, ability to buy 5 days per year
  • Private Medical Care, Life Cover, Pension
  • Subsidised gym membership
  • Hybrid working
