Job description

The Core Systems Engineering (CSE) team designs, builds, and maintains the platforms, APIs, reusable components, and developer tools that power UNOPS digital solutions - from AI applications and integration layers to business systems and project templates. CSE serves as the technical backbone for the AI Centre of Excellence, Business Applications, and IT Operations teams, providing them with the building blocks they need to deliver their own solutions., Under the supervision of the Systems Architect, the Senior Software Developer will design, develop, and maintain enterprise web applications, platform components, and developer tools. The incumbent will operate within established architectural patterns while utilizing modern development practices, including AI-assisted coding. The role demands strong problem-solving instincts, a proactive approach to delivery, and the ability to pick up new technologies quickly and apply sound engineering principles across different frameworks and languages., Design, implement, test, and deploy end-to-end features for CSE platforms and components using modern web technologies (.NET Core, NodeJS, Python, React, Angular), following established architectural patterns and SOLID principles.

* Build and maintain APIs, reusable components, and integration layers that other ITG teams can consume in their own applications.

* Design and implement database schemas and data access layers using both relational (SQL) and NoSQL databases, applying ORM patterns and query optimisation.

* Build responsive, accessible user interfaces with a solid understanding of component architecture, state management, and modern web standards.

  1. AI-assisted Development * Build AI-powered application features such as chatbots, content analysis, and intelligent data processing, working within the frameworks and templates designed by the Systems Architect.

* Use AI-assisted coding tools to improve productivity and code quality, ensuring AI-generated code meets the same quality bar as manually written code: reviewed, tested, secure, and compliant with organisational policies.

* Apply prompt engineering principles when integrating AI capabilities into applications and when using AI development tools.

  1. Cloud, Integration & DevOps * Integrate applications with Google Cloud Platform services (Vertex AI, Identity-Aware Proxy, Google Workspace, data processing and storage services) following established patterns and architectural guidance.

* Implement authentication and authorisation features using OAuth, token-based auth, and RBAC within cloud identity and access management systems.

* Work with the IT infrastructure team for deployment, environment configuration, and production troubleshooting.

* Apply scalable application patterns (serverless, event-driven) and performance optimisation techniques under the guidance of the Systems Architect.

* Work within established CI/CD pipelines and deployment processes to deliver and deploy features reliably.

  1. Quality & Process * Write and maintain unit tests and integration tests for all components delivered.

* Participate in SCRUM ceremonies, track development progress, and contribute to code reviews focusing on maintainability, security, and adherence to CSE standards.

* Maintain clear technical documentation for components and features built, ensuring other teams can understand and extend the work.

  1. Collaboration & Growth * Collaborate with Business Application developers on shared components, integrations, and consistent development practices across ITG.

* Contribute to technical discussions, architectural decisions, and solution design reviews, bringing implementation experience and practical trade-offs to the table., Treats all individuals with respect; responds sensitively to differences and encourages others to do the same. Upholds organisational and ethical norms. Maintains high standards of trustworthiness. Role model for diversity and inclusion. Acts as a positive role model contributing to the team spirit. Collaborates and supports the development of others. For people managers only: Acts as positive leadership role model, motivates, directs and inspires others to succeed, utilizing appropriate leadership styles. Demonstrates understanding of the impact of own role on all partners and always puts the end beneficiary first. Builds and maintains strong external relationships and is a competent partner for others (if relevant to the role). Efficiently establishes an appropriate course of action for self and/or others to accomplish a goal. Actions lead to total task accomplishment through concern for quality in all areas. Sees opportunities and takes the initiative to act on them. Understands that responsible use of resources maximizes our impact on our beneficiaries. Open to change and flexible in a fast paced environment. Effectively adapts own approach to suit changing circumstances or requirements. Reflects on experiences and modifies own behavior. Performance is consistent, even under pressure. Always pursues continuous improvements. Evaluates data and courses of action to reach logical, pragmatic decisions. Takes an unbiased, rational approach with calculated risks. Applies innovation and creativity to problem-solving. Expresses ideas or facts in a clear, concise and open manner. Communication indicates a consideration for the feelings and needs of others. Actively listens and proactively shares knowledge. Handles conflict effectively, by overcoming differences of opinion and finding common ground., * UNOPS will at no stage of the recruitment process request candidates to make payments of any kind.
