Job description

This is a hands-on technical role for someone who works agentically - directing AI systems to plan, scaffold, and ship complex development tasks, then reviewing and steering the output with the judgement of an experienced engineer. You’ll be the first dedicated developer on the platform, working directly with the Innovation Director on everything from scoping through to production.

We want a hands-on technical lead - entrepreneurial, high agency, a strong communicator, comfortable sitting with clinicians and factory staff to understand the problem first-hand, and able to shape the team as it grows. You’ll run with generative tooling daily but understand it’s a multiplier, not a substitute for knowing what a good result looks like - you’ll ask the questions an AI won’t (authorisation, data model, edge cases) and you’ll own the quality of what ships., * Direct AI coding agents across multi-file, multi-step development work - decomposing tasks, providing structured context, and taking full ownership of the output

  • Translate requirements, user journeys, and wireframes into working software
  • Build and ship across the full stack - front-end interfaces, REST APIs, relational data models, and integrations with existing systems
  • Contribute to architectural decisions on data model, authentication, hosting, and security - applying senior judgement where generative tools fall short
  • Maintain clean GitHub practices - version control, branching, code review, CI/CD
  • Sit with clinicians, operations, and manufacturing teams to understand user needs first-hand, and help shape the team as the platform grows

Our planned stack

  • Front-end: React + TypeScript, with Tailwind CSS and shadcn/ui
  • Mobile: Capacitor wrapping the web app - single codebase, deployed to web and device
  • Offline-first via Progressive Web App for clinician use
  • Backend: Node.js, single HTTP API, separate front-end deployables per persona (clinician / patient / manufacturing)
  • Database: PostgreSQL
  • Hosting: single cloud (AWS or Azure) with infrastructure-as-code
  • CI/CD on GitHub Actions with ephemeral (Phoenix) per-PR environments
  • Containerised deployments with Docker
  • Auth via Auth0 or Clerk (decision pending), We’d particularly like to hear about projects you’ve built using AI-assisted development workflows, what tools you use daily, and how your approach to development has changed as AI tooling has matured.

Requirements

Do you have experience in REST?, * Strong full-stack experience with React + TypeScript and Node.js, including REST API design and PostgreSQL (or equivalent relational DB) modelling

  • Hands-on cloud experience (AWS or Azure) - deployment, infrastructure-as-code, CI/CD pipelines
  • A genuinely agentic working style - directing AI coding agents across multi-file tasks with structured context, and critically reviewing output rather than accepting it
  • Senior-engineer judgement on the things generative tools get wrong: authentication, authorisation, data modelling, security, and edge cases
  • Strong written and verbal communication - you can explain technical decisions to clinicians, operations leaders, and board members
  • Entrepreneurial, high-agency, and comfortable working autonomously in a small team on a large, complex project

Benefits & conditions

  • Competitive Salary (dependent on experience)
  • Permanent role with a clear path to shape the team as the platform grows
  • 25 days annual leave plus bank holidays
  • Company pension scheme
  • Flexible, hybrid working (Sheffield or Newcastle upon Tyne)
  • AI tooling budget - we’ll invest in the tools you need to work at pace
