Job description
We’re hiring an electronic engineer to design and build the hardware that runs our automated neuroethology platforms. You’ll work alongside our experimental neuroscientists to turn experimental ideas into working electronics - from low-noise neural recording front-ends and stimulation hardware, to wireless power and telemetry, behavioural sensors, custom data acquisition, and the embedded systems that tie it all together. We work with Neuropixels 2.0 headstages and build custom hardware around them, so you’ll be designing into a real, demanding recording stack from day one. This is a hands-on role for someone who is happy to move quickly between schematic, PCB, bench, and rig - and who wants their circuits to end up running real experiments rather than sitting in a drawer.
The role is based at our London office near London Bridge. We work in person by default, but for the right candidate we’ll consider hybrid or fully remote arrangements - with regular travel to London and Brighton when hardware needs to meet rigs.
What you’ll do
- Design and build custom PCBs for neural recording, stimulation, and behavioural instrumentation - including hardware that integrates with Neuropixels 2.0 headstages
- Develop low-noise analog and mixed-signal front-ends for biosignal acquisition
- Design wireless power and data telemetry systems for chronic, untethered recordings
- Write embedded firmware (microcontroller / FPGA where appropriate) for data acquisition and rig control
- Prototype rapidly - breadboard to PCB to deployed hardware on short cycles
- Integrate electronics with mechanical fixtures, sensors, cameras, and recording systems on live experimental rigs
- Debug at the bench and in the field: oscilloscope, logic analyser, in the rig, under real recording conditions
- Own hardware reliability end-to-end - from spec to manufacture to maintenance
Requirements
Do you have experience in Python?, * 3-5+ years of hands-on professional electronics experience
- Strong PCB design skills (KiCad, Altium, or similar) - schematic capture through to manufacture-ready layouts
- Solid analog and mixed-signal design fundamentals - you understand noise, grounding, and signal integrity in practice, not just on paper
- Embedded firmware experience (C/C++ on microcontrollers; bonus for FPGA / HDL)
- Comfort with rapid prototyping across electronics, mechanical fabrication, and 3D printing
- Based in London (or willing to relocate), or able to travel to London / Brighton regularly if remote
Strongly preferred
- Experience with low-noise instrumentation, biosignal acquisition, or neural recording hardware
- Experience with wireless power transfer, RF design, or low-power telemetry
- Experience designing hardware that has shipped or been deployed in real-world / lab settings (not just prototypes)
- Comfort writing host-side software (Python) to talk to your own hardware
Nice to have
- Background in scientific instrumentation, medtech, or research hardware
- FPGA / high-speed digital experience
- Interest in neuroscience, foundation models, or whole brain emulation
- Comfort working in a fast-moving, startup-style research environment
Benefits & conditions
- Base: £65,000-85,000 (with flexibility above this for the right candidate)
- Equity: £30,000-60,000 / year, vesting monthly over 4 years with a 3-month cliff
- London Bridge office required - 2-3 days / week remote work for right candidates
Pay: £95,000.00-£145,000.00 per year
Work authorisation:
- United Kingdom (required)
