Job description

GM is seeking a Staff Software Architect to lead architecture, requirements, and verification strategy for mechatronics infrastructure software that underpins our next-generation vehicle electrical architecture and software-defined vehicle platform.

This role owns technical direction for one or more strategic infrastructure domains such as communications, diagnostics, controller safety, cybersecurity, programming, or data management. You will translate high-level system needs into clear, scalable, and testable software requirements, guide implementation across teams, and ensure solutions are validated through strong automation. You will also help drive adoption of AI and LLM-based tools to improve design quality, accelerate requirements and test creation, streamline debugging, and increase engineering productivity.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead technical direction and architectural decisions for key mechatronics infrastructure capabilities

  • Translate ECU and system-level needs into clear software architecture, interface definitions, and verification-ready requirements

  • Drive traceability from system intent through solution and POD-level requirements, automated tests, and delivered results

  • Partner across systems, software, validation, and leadership teams to align scope, resolve issues, and guide execution

  • Define verification strategy and support scalable automation using modern frameworks, CI/CD practices, and reusable patterns

  • Review requirements, design artifacts, software, and test content to improve quality, testability, and maintainability

  • Mentor engineers and raise the technical bar through standards, coaching, and reusable methods

  • Evaluate and scale new tools, frameworks, and AI-enabled workflows that improve coverage, quality, and speed, GM does not provide immigration-related sponsorship for this role. Do not apply for this role if you will need GM immigration sponsorship now or in the future. This includes direct company sponsorship, entry of GM as the immigration employer of record on a government form, and any work authorization requiring a written submission or other immigration support from the company (e.g., H1-B, OPT, STEM OPT, CPT, TN, J-1, etc). This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the selected candidate is expected to report to a specific location at least 3 times a week {or other frequency dictated by their manager}.This job is not eligible for relocation benefits. Any relocation costs would be the responsibility of the selected candidate. About GM

Our vision is a world with Zero Crashes, Zero Emissions and Zero Congestion and we embrace the responsibility to lead the change that will make our world better, safer and more equitable for all.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent experience

  • 8+ years of relevant experience in embedded, infrastructure, platform, or automotive software

  • Strong C++ proficiency and experience with test automation, tooling, or framework development

  • Deep understanding of embedded software architecture, requirements decomposition, and modern verification practices

  • Working knowledge of AUTOSAR Classic or similar embedded platforms

  • Experience with CAN, LIN, Ethernet, UDS, and DoIP, plus familiarity with distributed or service-oriented software concepts such as SOME/IP, DDS, or REST

  • Proven ability to lead cross-functional technical work, drive complex issues to closure, and communicate clearly with technical and non-technical stakeholders

  • Experience using AI or LLM tools to improve engineering efficiency, requirements quality, test creation, debugging, or workflow speed

What Can Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)

  • Master’s degree in a related field

  • 10+ years of experience in automotive, embedded platform, or software-defined vehicle environments

  • Experience owning architecture or technical strategy for a major software subsystem or platform capability

  • Experience scaling test automation frameworks, metrics, dashboards, and CI/CD integration

  • Familiarity with bench, HIL, SIL, and vehicle test workflows

  • Experience with diagnostics, flash programming, cybersecurity, controller safety, or core infrastructure platform development

  • Experience coaching senior engineers or leading across multiple Agile teams

  • Strong practical use of AI and LLM tools for requirements generation, test development, debugging, and faster development cycles
