Job description

Local transportation agency is seeking a hands-on Field Network Engineer to serve as a senior technical resource within the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) program. This role is responsible for the design, deployment, and day-to-day operations of a secure, highly available ITS network that connects traffic signals, video surveillance systems, and IoT devices across the city. The network environment leverages Metro Ethernet services as the transport underlay, fiber optic infrastructure for local connectivity, and a Cisco DMVPN secure overlay to link distributed field sites back to agency’s headend facilities and data centers. The engineer will work hands- on in the field and in data center environments, with a focus on uptime, safety, and reliability in mission-critical operations., * Deploy and support Cisco DMVPN (Phase 2/Phase 3) hub-and-spoke and spoke-to-spoke overlay networks across Metro Ethernet transport.

  • Configure and troubleshoot IPsec VPN profiles, GRE tunnels, NHRP mappings, and tunnel interfaces for the DMVPN fabric.
  • Design failover and redundancy strategies, including LTE/5G backup paths, to ensure uninterrupted connectivity during circuit or equipment outages.
  • Monitor tunnel health, latency, and throughput to maintain performance standards across all VPN connections.
  • Design, engineer, and deploy fiber optic transport networks connecting agency headend facilities, data centers, and remote field aggregation sites.
  • Maintain fiber documentation including strand maps, splice records, and as-built drawings for all agency fiber assets.
  • Coordinate with service providers on Metro Ethernet circuit provisioning (E-Line, E-LAN), turn-up, and incident resolution.
  • Manage VLAN configurations, IP addressing schemes, and Layer 2/Layer 3 connectivity between remote aggregation points and headend data centers.
  • Implement and maintain network segmentation using VRFs, VLANs, and firewall policies to isolate ITS traffic domains.
  • Support agency’s traffic signal control systems, CCTV/video surveillance platforms, and IoT field devices by ensuring reliable, low-latency transport connectivity.
  • Ensure all network connections utilize encrypted communications per agency and local government security policies., * Proper segmentation and protection of traffic signal, video, and IoT systems
  • Rapid troubleshooting and resolution of network incidents with minimal downtime
  • Well-maintained documentation supporting operational continuity and future growth
  • Scalable and resilient network architecture supporting agency’s smart infrastructure initiatives

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Network Engineering, or related field
  • Minimum 5 years of hands-on network engineering experience
  • Experience deploying and supporting Cisco DMVPN in a production environment
  • Strong knowledge of Cisco routing and switching platforms, DMVPN, fiber optic networks, WAN transport, LAN technologies, and network monitoring tools, * Experience with Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS)
  • Experience with LTE/5G failover solutions
  • Experience with network automation tools
  • Knowledge of IoT security and segmentation best practices
  • Experience with high-availability network design and disaster recovery planning

Certifications:

  • Required: CCNA
  • Strongly Preferred: CCNP Enterprise
  • Desired: CCIE Enterprise Infrastructure, Certified Fiber Optic Technician (CFOT), CompTIA Network+ or Security+, ITIL v4 Foundation

Critical Requirement: Candidates must have demonstrated hands-on experience deploying or supporting Cisco DMVPN in a production environment.

Work Environment

  • Combination of field work, data center operations, and remote support
  • Travel to field locations required
  • Ability to lift and rack network equipment up to 50 lbs
  • Participation in scheduled maintenance windows and on-call availability for after-hours emergency response
