Design Engineer

We are looking for a motivated and capable Design Engineer to join our engineering team. The role will involve designing bespoke machinery, mechanical assemblies, guarding, frames, conveyors, and automation equipment using 3D CAD.

You will work closely with the workshop team, suppliers, and customers to develop practical designs that can be manufactured, assembled, and commissioned effectively. This is a hands-on design role where you will be involved throughout the project lifecycle, from initial concept and layout through to detailed drawings, BOMs, and support during build.

Key Responsibilities

• Design mechanical components, assemblies, frames, guards, conveyors, and bespoke automation equipment.
• Produce 3D models, manufacturing drawings, assembly drawings, and BOMs.
• Develop practical design solutions based on customer requirements, site constraints, and project specifications.
• Work closely with the workshop team to support manufacture, assembly, testing, and commissioning.
• Liaise with suppliers for bought-in components, materials, and manufactured parts.
• Assist with site surveys, customer discussions, and project reviews where required.
• Support continuous improvement of Hexatomic’s design standards, documentation, and internal processes.
• Ensure designs consider safety, reliability, manufacturability, cost, and ease of maintenance.
• Occasionally attend customer sites within the UK to support installations, surveys, or commissioning activities.

Do you have experience in SolidWorks?, * Experience in mechanical design, ideally within machinery, automation, conveyors, packaging equipment, or similar industries.

• Good working knowledge of 3D CAD, preferably SolidWorks.
• Ability to produce clear and accurate manufacturing and assembly drawings.
• Good understanding of fabricated structures, sheet metal, machined parts, and bought-in mechanical components.
• Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings.
• Practical problem-solving skills and a hands-on approach to design.
• Good communication skills and the ability to work closely with workshop, controls, and project teams.
• Strong attention to detail and pride in producing well-considered engineering work.
• Knowledge of machinery safety, guarding, pneumatics, or automation systems would be beneficial.
• Willingness to occasionally travel to customer sites within the UK.

The ideal candidate will be someone who enjoys designing real, practical machinery rather than just producing drawings. You will be comfortable working in a small engineering team, taking ownership of your work, and adapting designs as projects develop.

You should be organised, reliable, and able to balance good engineering practice with commercial and manufacturing considerations.
