The Virtual Chief Information Officer (vCIO) serves as a strategic IT advisor to client organizations. Acting as an extension of the client’s leadership team, the vCIO aligns technology with business goals, manages IT roadmaps and budgets, and provides executive-level guidance without day-to-day operational responsibility.
Key ResponsibilitiesStrategic Planning & Advisory
- Develop and maintain multi-year IT roadmaps aligned with client business objectives
- Translate business goals into practical, scalable technology strategies
- Advise clients on digital transformation, cloud strategy, cybersecurity, and infrastructure modernization
- Serve as the primary executive IT advisor for assigned accounts
Client Leadership & Communication
- Conduct regular vCIO/QBR meetings with client leadership
- Present technical concepts in clear, business-focused language
- Build trusted advisor relationships with executives and stakeholders
- Provide risk assessments and decision support for leadership teams
Financial & Budget Oversight
- Assist clients with IT budgeting, forecasting, and cost optimization
- Evaluate ROI for IT initiatives and technology investments
- Recommend right-sizing of services, tools, and licensing
Governance, Risk & Compliance
- Guide clients on security best practices and risk management
- Support compliance initiatives (e.g., HIPAA, NIST, CMMC, SOC, ISO, etc., as applicable)
- Identify gaps in policies, procedures, and controls
- Collaborate with internal security and compliance teams
Internal Collaboration
- Work closely with service delivery, engineering, and project teams
- Ensure strategic recommendations are actionable and supported operationally
- Provide strategic input for onboarding, major changes, and escalations
What the vCIO Is Not
- Not a help desk technician
- Not responsible for daily ticket resolution
- Not a project manager (though may provide strategic oversight)
Requirements
- 7+ years in IT, infrastructure, or MSP environments
- Experience working directly with executive leadership
- Strong understanding of:
- Networking, cloud platforms, and cybersecurity fundamentals
- MSP service models and managed service economics
- Business operations and financial concepts
- Exceptional communication and presentation skills, * Prior vCIO, IT Director, or IT Manager experience
- Experience in regulated industries (healthcare, manufacturing, government, etc.)
- Familiarity with frameworks such as NIST, CIS, ITIL
- Business or technical certifications (CISSP, CISM, ITIL, MBA, etc.)

- Reduction of unplanned IT risk
- Alignment between client business goals and IT execution
