What you’ll do…

About the Team

The Spark Driver Experience team powers the technology ecosystem supporting Walmart’s gig delivery workforce across the United States. The organization owns the end-to-end driver experience, including onboarding, offer discovery and acceptance, trip execution, earnings, communications, safety, and support experiences.

The platform supports hundreds of thousands of active drivers and serves as a foundational component of Walmart’s rapidly growing Last Mile Delivery ecosystem spanning grocery, general merchandise, and same-day delivery.

In addition to the driver-facing mobile applications, the team owns and operates highly scalable backend services and real-time distributed platforms powering offer orchestration, trip management, driver engagement, notifications, earnings computation, and operational workflows at enterprise scale.

This role sits at the intersection of mobile engineering, distributed systems, AI-driven experiences, platform reliability, and operational excellence.

What You’ll Do

As Director of Engineering, you will lead multiple engineering teams responsible for building and scaling the technology platforms powering Walmart’s Spark Driver ecosystem and Last Mile Delivery experiences.

You will:

  • Define and drive the long-term engineering vision, technical strategy, and platform roadmap for Spark Driver experiences and supporting backend systems

  • Lead highly scalable mobile and backend engineering organizations responsible for critical real-time delivery and logistics workflows

  • Partner closely with Product, Design, Data Science, Operations, Trust & Safety, Finance, and Business teams to deliver seamless and intelligent driver experiences

  • Drive engineering excellence across architecture, observability, resiliency, operational readiness, testing automation, incident management, and platform governance

  • Lead platform modernization initiatives focused on scalability, reliability, developer productivity, and operational efficiency

  • Embed AI-driven capabilities, intelligent automation, and conversational experiences into driver support, operational tooling, and delivery workflows

  • Build and scale resilient distributed systems supporting high-volume offer orchestration, trip execution, earnings transparency, and real-time communications

  • Ensure platform integrity, financial accuracy, security, and compliance across driver payments, incentives, and operational systems

  • Drive operational excellence initiatives across telemetry, distributed tracing, reliability engineering, alerting, and production support processes

  • Support the expansion of Walmart’s Last Mile Delivery platform into new business models, geographies, and growth initiatives

  • Hire, mentor, and develop high-performing engineering leaders and teams while fostering a culture of innovation, accountability, inclusion, and customer obsession

  • Influence cross-functional technology strategy and help shape the future of Walmart’s Last Mile Delivery ecosystem

Requirements

  • 18+ years of software engineering experience, including significant experience leading large-scale engineering organizations and distributed teams

  • Proven experience building and scaling consumer-facing mobile platforms and large-scale backend distributed systems

  • Strong technical depth across mobile technologies, cloud-native architectures, APIs, distributed systems, and real-time platforms

  • Experience leading engineering organizations operating at enterprise scale with high availability, operational rigor, and performance expectations

  • Demonstrated success driving platform reliability, observability, resiliency, and operational excellence initiatives

  • Experience leading modernization and platform transformation efforts in rapidly evolving environments

  • Strong cross-functional leadership skills with the ability to influence business, product, and technology stakeholders

  • Experience managing managers and senior engineering leaders while building high-performing engineering cultures

  • Ability to balance strategic thinking with execution excellence in fast-paced and highly complex environments

  • Experience with AI/ML-driven platforms, conversational AI, intelligent automation, or agentic systems is a strong plus

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience building platforms supporting logistics, mobility, gig economy, or marketplace ecosystems

  • Experience operating high-scale real-time platforms supporting millions of customer or driver interactions

  • Familiarity with AI-powered support systems, recommendation systems, or intelligent operational tooling

  • Experience driving engineering excellence initiatives across CI/CD, testing automation, reliability engineering, and observability platforms

  • Strong understanding of platform governance, security, compliance, and operational risk management, Outlined below are the required minimum qualifications for this position. If none are listed, there are no minimum qualifications.

Option 1: Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, computer information systems, software engineering, or related area and 6 years’ experience in software engineering or related area.

Option 2: 8 years’ experience in software engineering or related area.

3 years’ supervisory experience.
