Job description

Torch Technologies has an exciting opportunity for a Server Systems Engineer to support secure network and system architecture, virtualization, and hybrid-cloud integration while collaborating with systems, network, and cybersecurity teams at Eglin AFB, FL. The role includes implementing NIST/RMF security controls, supporting DevSecOps automation, managing VMware and cloud services, enabling connectivity for research environments, and maintaining monitoring tools, SIEM integrations, and technical documentation. It also involves contributing to long-term infrastructure planning and providing mentorship across engineering teams.

As a Server Systems Engineer your duties will include the following, but are not limited to:

  • Collaborate with systems and network engineers to implement network topologies for current and future connected and isolated environments, providing server and network administration expertise.
  • Support the deployment of STAR Net solutions that support continuous research, development, and DevSecOps, working closely with network and cybersecurity engineers to configure and maintain servers and network devices.
  • Assist with server and network planning for long-term initiatives, including SDREN integration and the Weapons Technology Integration Center (WTIC), in conjunction with network and security planning efforts.
  • Provide input on server and network innovation roadmaps aligned with mission goals and emerging technologies, coordinating with network and cybersecurity engineers to ensure alignment.
  • Coordinate with facilities, engineering, network, and security teams to ensure robust infrastructure supports research operations, focusing on the server and network aspects of hardware/power/cooling needs and structured cabling.
  • Support containerization, virtualization, and orchestration of systems to support laboratory computing, HPC, and edge devices, working with network and cybersecurity engineers to implement and maintain secure configurations.
  • Implement security controls on servers and network devices in compliance with NIST 800-series, DoD RMF, DISA STIGs, and cybersecurity best practices, collaborating with network and cybersecurity engineers to ensure seamless integration.
  • Support DevSecOps pipelines by automating server and network configuration and security scans, working with network and cybersecurity engineers to integrate security into existing pipelines.
  • Understanding of RMF, NIST 800-53 controls, and related compliance frameworks.
  • Assist with ATO package development by providing server and network documentation and support, collaborating with ISSMs, network engineers, and cybersecurity stakeholders to ensure compliance.
  • Implement identity management and single sign-on solutions on servers and network devices across enclaves and hybrid environments, coordinating with servers, network and cybersecurity engineers to implement and maintain these solutions.
  • Manager VMware, Harvester, Microsoft, etc. virtualization infrastructure, including deployment, monitoring, and lifecycle support of virtual machines
  • Deploy and maintain hybrid cloud services and virtualization platforms (e.g., VMware, AWS, Azure), working with network and cybersecurity engineers to ensure secure and reliable server and network configurations.
  • Manage storage (SAN, EFS, EBS), automation (Terraform, Packer, Ansible), and orchestration (Kubernetes, Docker) solutions, providing server and network administration expertise.
  • Enable connectivity between scientific equipment, cloud resources, and virtual desktops, collaborating with network and cybersecurity engineers to implement and maintain these connections.
  • Monitor server and network performance using platforms like OpManager, ManageEngine, and custom dashboards, working with network and cybersecurity engineers to correlate data and identify issues.
  • Maintain and update technical documentation, including system configurations, architecture diagrams, and security controls with tools like Lucidchart, Visio, and Confluence, ensuring documentation is aligned with network and security documentation.
  • Implement and maintain a Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) solution, including log integration, monitoring, dashboard development, and incident response support (Splunk, Elastic, ArcSight, etc.).
  • Provide knowledge transfer, mentorship, and technical guidance to engineers and stakeholders on server and network-related matters, working with network and cybersecurity engineers to provide comprehensive guidance.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship
  • Associate Degree or Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or related field. 12 years relevant experience may be substituted for the Master’s degree.

  • Certifications:
  • DoD 8570 IAT Level II compliant (Security+ CE certification).
  • VMware, CompTIA Server+, Windows, Linux+, or relevant certifications.
  • Strong understanding of server operating systems (Windows Server, Linux).
  • Familiar with VMware, Windows, and Linux vulnerability remediation
  • Experience with network devices (routers, switches, firewalls).
  • Solid proficiency in Microsoft Hyper-V, Harvester, VMware vSphere/ESXi) management and administration.
  • Experience with scripting (Ansible, Python, PowerShell, Bash, etc.).

  • Experience with containerization technologies (Kubernetes, Docker, etc.)
  • Familiarity with Risk Management Framework (RMF), Authority to Operate (ATO) documentation, and enclave compliance management.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively with cybersecurity teams and system owners.
  • Physically able to lift up to 50 lbs; adaptable to fieldwork and hands-on installations., * Master’s degree
  • 8-10 years’ experience within DoD or USAF environments
  • Must have and maintain Secret level Security Clearance and must be Top Secret eligible.
