Transitioning to a software company and agile struggles

Transitioning a traditional aviation maintenance organization into a digital software provider exposes issues with defining agile adoption.

#2 about 2 min

How the agile manifesto evolved into heavy complex frameworks

The original lightweight agile manifesto has been overwhelmed by heavy administrative processes and complex certification frameworks.

#3 about 2 min

Using inversion to avoid terrible engineering management decisions

Adopting Charlie Munger's inversion strategy highlights software development anti-patterns by focusing on decisions to actively avoid.

#4 about 3 min

Establishing superficial agile cargo cults through useless office imitation

Copying office gadgets and superficial rituals from tech companies fails to create a genuinely agile culture.

#5 about 1 min

Disrupting software engineering productivity by flooding calendars with meetings

Administrative alignment meetings destroy the deep focus needed by developers to solve complex technical problems.

#6 about 3 min

Wasting sprint capacity on overarching team synchronization and alignment

Replacing excessive synchronous alignment meetings with asynchronous communication and better architectural boundaries recovers lost sprint time.

#7 about 3 min

Designing poor software architectures by ignoring Conway's law

Grouping developers by technical profession instead of value streams creates monolithic bottlenecks that mirror poor organizational structures.

#8 about 2 min

Undervaluing product design by treating software engineers as generic programmers

Recognizing software engineers as system designers prevents them from being treated as simple coders executing given requirements.

#9 about 2 min

Misusing agile coaches for administrative and event planning tasks

Forcing agile coaches into event planning and administrative roles nullifies their actual value in improving team methodologies.

#10 about 4 min

Appointing absent part-time product owners without any decision power

Empowering executives as absent part-time product owners without decision authority leads to irrelevant feature development.

#11 about 4 min

Using rigid project modes for complex digital product transformations

Applying rigid project management constraints to volatile digital products stifles iterative adaptation and increases organizational debt.

#12 about 3 min

Prioritizing theoretical framework certifications over practical iterative learning loops

Mastering agile requires authentic practical experimentation instead of endlessly collecting theoretical scaled agile framework and scrum certifications.

#13 about 3 min

Balancing rigid organizational hierarchies with autonomous team playing grounds

Shaping precise constraints allows traditional management hierarchies to coexist with fully autonomous cross-functional product teams.

#14 about 2 min

Summarizing effective approaches for authentic team autonomy and growth

Replacing superficial imitation with tailored autonomy allows teams to discover authentic practices for delivering software value.
