Job description

We are looking for a Technical Lighter who reflects the innovative spirit, creative talent, production excellence, collaborative mindset, and passion for great filmmaking that define ILM.

The successful candidate will work within the lighting department to ensure renders are efficient and optimized, and assist lighting TDs with debugging scenes.

The Tech Lighter collaborates closely with the local HoD of lighting, lighting leads / supervisors, and lighting ATL, as well as interface with DRM / TAs, PipeTDs, and lighting engineering. They work across shows, responding to requests and proactively identifying problematic renders early in the production process.

What You'll Do :

  • Profile and optimize inefficient renders across projects, including memory and render time, using Katana and RIS, communicating with other departments as needed.
  • Assist in debugging lighting setups, triage issues, create repros, manage JIRA tickets, and escalate when necessary.
  • Monitor the render farm for problematic high-resource renders, providing feedback to artists and leads.
  • Report performance trends to the local HoD of lighting.
  • Collaborate with DRM / TAs to investigate and resolve problematic renders.
  • Work on asset / environment render setup sanitization and sequence optimization.
  • Provide documentation and training on profiling, optimizing, and debugging lighting renders.
  • Identify and prototype tools to improve rendering efficiency and reliability.

Requirements

  • Experience with Katana and RIS.
  • Familiarity with Python / OpScript.
  • Lighting experience.
  • Proactive problem-solving skills.
  • Good organization and communication skills.
  • Debugging and profiling / optimization experience.
  • Understanding of path tracing renderers fundamentals.
  • Basic knowledge of Houdini is beneficial.
  • Knowledge of USD is a bonus. This role is hybrid, requiring a minimum of 2 days on-site per week at a designated location, with occasional remote work.
