Job description

Lonza is hiring a Design Engineer. The Project Engineering Team manages the CapEx program and develops the technical engineering design. As part of this Department, the Design Engineer is responsible for the design deliverables of the engineering disciplines across Capex projects, ensuring compliance with user requirements and applicable regulations. The role requires alignment with key stakeholders (Sponsor/End User, MSAT, Process, Construction, Operations Technology, CQV, Quality, EHS, Procurement…) and adherence to project objectives in terms of cost schedule, quality, and safety. What You'll Do

  • Coordinates complexity design tasks managed internally and/or with external engineering firms.
  • Define and be responsible for the generation of all discipline deliverables (specifications, plans, lists, scopes, protocols...) until the final review 'as built', including the necessary support bid packages documentation.
  • Define the calculations and/or previous studies necessary for the development of design activities.
  • Define design activities and their planning by defining efforts and sequences.
  • Define the estimation bases and make discipline estimates.
  • Integrate aspects of constructability (consider the restrictions of executing with a plant in operation), operability, maintainability and safety in the design, in close collaboration with Construction, Operations, Maintenance and EHS.
  • Keep the discipline plant master documentation updated (and archive the historical documentation).
  • Make change requests, technical reports and/or optimization studies.
  • Perform, witness or review of FAT/SAT of equipment.
  • Analyze the impact on time, cost and resources of design changes.
  • Inspection and documented technical reception of equipment.
  • Generate databases of suppliers, installers, equipment, components, materials…
  • Participates in interdepartmental meetings to align design requirements.
  • Monitors progress of design packages and reports deviations.
  • Supervises and validates design deliverables before project integration.
  • Coordinates design integration with internal departments (operations, maintenance, construction, SHE, Process and OT).

Requirements

  • MSc or BSc in Industrial Engineering.
  • Spanish native speaker and English business fluent (min B2).
  • At least 5-year experience in a similar position within Pharma & Biotech or related industry (Life Sciences, Healthcare, Fine Chemicals, Food & Beverage).
  • Experience in the design of utility systems such as plant steam, clean steam, reverse osmosis, purified waters, compressed air, cooling water, pharmaceutical grade gases and chemicals, HVAC and wastewater treatment.
  • Knowledge of main international design standards for equipment, machinery & facilities (ASME, UNE-EN-ISO…), pharmaceutical sanitary design and regulations such as FDA cGMP, ASME-BPE and ISPE guidelines and Spanish industrial safety regulations.
  • Experience with AutoCAD, MS Project and MS Excel.
  • Ability to analyze large and complex data sets and to understand the business impact of decisions.
  • Effective influencing and persuading abilities. Positive, proactive, diligent, engaged and accessible/open to dialogue person.
